stinkypete's Full Review: Canon PowerShot SD1000 / Digital IXUS 70 Digital C...
I needed a highly portable digital camera to substitute for my larger Canon dSLR. I didn't need anything fancy, anything expensive, nor did I need the latest technology. I wanted a great picture, durability and price. I found the PowerShot SD1000.
For $169.00 new out of the box, the SD1000 is a very plain, simple looking camera. The metal casing is nice and proved to be a life saver at one point.
The camera came with a 32 MB SD card, battery and charger. The Memory card is good for about 8 shots at maximum quality, so i also purchased 2 2 GB memory cards and another battery.
The SD1000 has a 3x optical zoom and a 3x digital zoom. I never shoot with the digital zoom on as it's not real, just the processor making extra pixels that don't really exist.
Upon startup I was pleasantly surprised with the screen and it's shooting quality. The screen is bright and big and has the ability to shoot using the view in the screen or through the eye hole. The controls are easy to use and thought out well. The camera is a point and shoot, but you can of course do white balance, red eye and basic color correction. The camera has movie w/ sound which happens to work quite well with the exception that the files are not compressed and fill the memory card up fast.
There are the standard set of features found on most cameras now-a-day. the different shooting modes, time delay, etc...
The camera shoots in native .jpg for format and makes .avi movies. @ full size (7.1 MegaPixels), the average image is 2.4 MB's each @ 180 DPI. Not bad.
Shutter speed is whats expected from a point and shoot. It has a no blur feature which helps keeping things intact and blur free in low light. It works, but not so well - use a tripod instead.
As mentioned the camera was a life saver - the case that is. The metal case absorbed a 12 foot drop down into a pile of jagged rocks on a beach. The case is a bit dented up, but it didn't even turn off after the fall. This is a durable camera.
The camera comes with software and drivers, but if you have a memory card reader on your computer, there is no need to install anything. Just pop the memory card out and put it in the appropriate slot in your computer. It's faster and required no wires.
For the price I paid, i got everything I wanted in a pocket sized point and shoot. I can take 600 images on one battery and be happy with the quality. I recommend this camera for anything who wants a low cost, simple, durable camera, this is the one.
