Best in it's class at a bargain price now

Pros: Compact, strong construction, cheap, quick, little lag, uses cheap SD cards.

Cons: Dust Halo problems with flash photography, no battery indicator.

The Bottom Line: Great deal for a solid compact camera. Hunderds less than when it first came out 1 1/2 ago.

Great little camera at a great price as they are clearing them to make way for the new SD1100 which will cost $100+ more. Is it worth it? Some current reviews say no. The new model does have image stabilization but for this camera probably not really necessary unless you have a very shakey hand.

At the end of the day, I chose the SD1000 model as it will suffice for a few yrs before i get another camera. It's been rated the best in it's class of compact point and shoots for the past year and a half by most reviews and users. You will not go wrong with the SD1000.

PROS

Size is smaller than a business card

solid brick like built

fast response - virtually no shutter lag

hi resolution lcd screen 230k

fast start up

price (esp now that they are being cleared out making way for the SD1100)


CONS

white spots on pics when taking indoor shot in certain circumstance. This is call dust halos and is caused by the flash/lense being so close together that dust can show up on your pictures. This is sooooo irritating. It can ruin a lot of shots as you don't always check every shot you take until you load them on your computer. This is the price you pay for compactness. I was seriously thinking of returning this unit because of this.

no battery indicator except when low. You need a back up battery with these types of lithium ion. Get a few on ebay even though not same as OEM (but for 1/6 the the price of the OEM - it serves it's purpose)

flat cursors could be tricky for big fingered people

avi format eats your card away when filming video (only 8 min per GB) Sony uses MPEG which held 2x or 3 x that. Definitely need a 2-4GB card.

Proprietory battery. Will probably try to buy the generic ones on ebay for $5 just as a back up.

Can't easily view previous picture unless you switch back to play mode (unlike sony which allows you to view last pic taken by pressing cursor)

No image stabilization but i did my experience and took a pic shaking the camera and it was fast enough to be blur free.


Considered the Sony W80 as i already have a 4GB stick, but most review put the SD1000 ahead of it in most respects except battery life and the image stabilization feature. The W80 is slightly bigger too.
