The Casablanca Hotel, located on West 43rd Street, just off Times Square, is a quiet oasis in the midst of Manhattans tourist mecca. With fewer than 50 rooms, the Moroccan-themed Casablanca hotel provides a low-key atmosphere with personalized service. We were greeted warmly upon check-in and although we arrived three hours prior to check in, one of our two rooms was ready. We were discreetly advised that both rooms had been upgraded from the Deluxe Queen to a Deluxe King (at 6 ˝ months pregnant I was happy to hear that!). The rooms were booked online at $265.
Both rooms were decent size perfectly acceptable by Manhattan standards. The room was dominated by the bed, but also had a TV/VCR (with complimentary Casablanca video), mini bar, table with chairs, ceiling fan, window A/C and complimentary bottled water and chocolates. The bathroom was roomy by Manhattan standards with bath/shower, pedestal sink and toilet. The room was located off the street overlooking other rooms across a courtyard (read: overlooking nothing, but it was quiet!) and due to its location, was a bit dark with only one window in the bedroom and one in the bathroom. However, we were happy with the rooms given some of the closets we have stayed in in larger, more upscale Manhattan hotels, this was turning out to be a find.
The hotel offers a complimentary wine/cheese reception from 5PM to 8 PM the wine isnt great, but the price was right and the thought and service was really the point. Continental breakfast was included and was better than anticipated, offering hot beverages (including cappuccino/espresso), pastries, cereal, bagels, yogurt, fresh fruit and juices. Again service was pleasant and accommodating. Both breakfast and the wine reception are served in Ricks café a roomy area with tables, couches, fireplace and large screen TV. Ricks Café offers refreshment throughout the day on a serve yourself basis.
While Casablancas location is fantastic for the touristy, theatre going set, its best feature is its service. Everyone we encountered from housekeeping, to bellhops, to front desk, to concierge was pleasant, friendly and more than accommodating (the front desk clerk and concierge always called us by name).
I live in the NYC suburbs and am often frustrated by the lack of service especially in the heavily touristy areas of the city Casablanca is a definite exception. Its not a luxury hotel, but its a great boutique hotel with nice, clean accommodation in the heart of Times Square and Midtown.
