| DoubleCoog's Full Review: Cascade Designs Therm-a-Rest Luxury LE |
During the summer of 1998, I spent 40 of 45 consecutive nights sleeping on my Luxury Edition (LE), extra long Therm-a-rest pad. I could not have survived my cross country, 3400 mile bike trip without it.
After cycling an average of 85 miles a day, I needed my sleep; the last thing I needed was to wake up sore. I got enough of that doing the cycling.....
The Luxury Edition differs from the other Therm-a rests in that it has a velvety non-slip surface, and extra foam padding. (I needed every bit of this padding when I had to camp in "the Gravel Pit" in mountains of Idaho after cycling 100 miles that day, in the rain, all up hill). I found that my pad deflates to a smaller size than my friend's standard therm-a-rest as well. The extra long pad is about 7 feet long and will fit just about anyone.
The luxury edition comes with an stuff sack and repair kit -- which after more wear & tear than most people will ever put on a Therm-a-rest, I have yet to have need for.
I almost balked at the $100 price tag, but soon realized that for a $2 a night comfortable bed, I was getting a bargain.
It's worth noting, I had planed to do the trip with a foam pad, but after being unable to sleep on them on some overnight training rides (My sore legs & back never could find a relaxing position without uncomfortable pressure points) I decided to shell out the bucks for some comfort. I highly recommend you do the same. (10/00)
Update: Three years later, and this pad is still going strong. It does need some help inflating -- but that is my own fault as I do store it rolled (a definite no-no if you want to keep things like new, self-inflating and comfortable, as long as possible).
That said. Mine is over 5 years old and works like a charm, even on a very large adult. (10/03)
