americanpilot's Full Review: Casio Pocket Viewer PV-S400Plus Handheld
I had been searching for a PDA that would replace my everyday Apple Newton PDA. I have been using the Apple product for a number of years but finally came to terms that I should replace it. The Apple Newton OS was great but it was already outdated and the unit was like lugging a case of rocks. I went out and bought a Palm m100 based on a recommendation from a friend and hated the operating system. I then moved to a Psion PDA and hated it as well. I then focused on the Casio products since it was pretty much my last option. I looked at the model PV-200 but noted that the 2 megs of memory was insufficient so ended up with the PV-400 plus that has 4 megs. I have never been as happy with a PDA (only happier when I first bought an Apple Newton). The menus are very easy to navigate and setup is a snap. So far I have not needed the manual at all. (Note: The manual is like not having a manual, it looks as if the Japanese casio employees wrote it without knowing english translation)
*The Unit: The unit is sturdy, hard plastic that will last a few years with proper care. It's nice and lightweight and really thin. I don't really like the face cover it brings. It snaps on and off, it would have been nice if they would have designed it to permanently stay on the unit with hinges. The stylus is very sturdy & comfortable and it hides in a compartment on the side of the unit. My big complaint is the screen. It has a real nice size and a brilliant backlight but the visibility is sub par. Even when you adjust the contrast, it still is not very good.
*The operating system: The OS is a proprietary Casio OS. It's very simple to use and you navigate it via a menu that has big icons & text. It can be navigated via the stylus or the buttons on the unit. Operating it is a no brainer for practically anybody. I have also noticed no glitches in the software which was a concern for me. The Palm OS was a nightmare in that concern.
*The Applications: You have pocket sheet which is a basic spreadsheet program. You have a nice scheduler, a contacts program (best feature!), an expense program, a memo program which allows you to take notes using the stylus like a pen, a calculator, a currency converter and a couple of card games. All are super easy to use and very easy to navigate.
