| Javelina's Full Review: Clairol Herbal Essences Clarifying for Normal To O... |
I generally don't buy Clairol products, just because they seem over hyped, and there is usually a store-knockoff at a lower price that I would choose instead (being that the ingredients are the same). However, during a shopping excursion in Target, they had a really good deal on a Clairol shampoo/conditioner combo, so I couldnt resist.
Clairol Herbal Essences Clarifying Shampoo
You get 12 fl oz (355 ml) of shampoo in a bottle. This costs around $3.59. Herbal Essences products are pretty easy to find, as well as the knockoff store brand imitations! (Although I don't know if this comes as a knock off).
This shampoo comes in a clear plastic bottle that is very trademark in terms of Herbal Essences. The shampoo itself is translucent green, and there is a flowery backing to the shampoo bottle. The cap is a flip-top cap, which makes dispensing a breeze (and never clogs).
The scent, is, well, very "Herbal Essences". It is very sweet, flowery, and feminine. The scent is very noticeable, and only lingers slightly on your hair after showering. (You would pretty much have to sniff your hair to smell it, which hey, the husband can appreciate).
My Thoughts & Experiences
I bought this product pretty much on a whim. Once in a while, my girly side just cant refuse a girly product, and the scent of Herbal Essences shampoo can be pretty irresistible. Coupled with a sale price, I was sold.
I also found the premise of a clarifying shampoo to be good. I hate the feeling of an oily scalp and buildup of products on my hair. I often use conditioner, leave-in conditioners, and hair spray, so I figure my hair can use a good cleaning. My roots tend to get greasy, while the tips of my hair get dry. I also tend to play with my hair out of boredom (something my mother couldnt stand), which never helps as you essentially coat your hand with oils from your skin.
Herbal Essences Clarifying Shampoo blends natural Rosemary, Jasmine, and Orange Flavor with other plant-derived ingredients to clarifying and provide gentle cleansing, removing oils and styling build-up and enhancing shine.
The scent is definitely a wonderful aroma. I cant say I have ever used an Herbal Essences hair product (or knockoff replica) and not liked the smell. As a shampoo, the scent does not linger strongly. I can detect it on my hair a little bit, but it is pretty much limited to sniffing my hair or my husband sniffing it. Sometimes I wish the scent lasted more on my hair.
The Clairol Herbal Essences Clarifying Shampoo lathers up nicely, and I even go as far as to leave it on my scalp for a little while. It also washes cleanly, which is what I would expect from a clarifying shampoo!
Once I am out of the shower and dry my hair, I notice that when I use this shampoo, my hair feels lighter and silkier. I really think it does remove buildup and some of the greasiness from my scalp. Although I shower daily, I dont necessarily wash my hair every single day. Recently, this has especially been the case on weekends as I am preparing my moms house for sale. Between grungy hair, styling product build-up, and then all the dirt (like drywall dust) in my hair just feels gross. My hair truly feels lighter after using Herbal Essences Clarifying Shampoo!
What I like best is that this shampoo somehow manages to stay gentle, but yet effective enough to clean my hair. I dont feel like my hair is too dry after using it, and that is important. The silkiness of my hair is wonderful, and I am thrilled that this shampoo doesnt seem to strip my hair. It help maintains a balance between not washing my hair for an extra day and then over-washing it in an attempt to rid my roots of greasiness. Since I do not wash my hair every single day (yea, I'd be bald), it helps to use this shampoo because I feel that it helps my hair "last longer" into day 2 without getting too limp and greasy. I would have no problem using this shampoo on a daily basis, either.
Ingredients & Animal Testing
Water, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Cocamide MEA, Fragrance, Citric Acid, Disodium EDTA-Copper, Propylene Glycol, Quaternium-75, Jasmine Extract, Iodopropyl Butylcarbamate, Orange Flower Extract, FD&C Yellow #5 Tartrazine, Rosemary Extract, DMDM Hydantoin, Ext. D&C Violet #2
It does appear that many of the ingredients are detergents (such as Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate). I guess it does make sense that a clarifying shampoo has detergents in it, but I am never happy to see a chemical concoction when I read ingredients for bath and body products.
Herbal Essences shampoo bottles use 25% post-consumer recycled plastic, and are recyclable. Check if recycling centers are available in your area. Squeezable plastics are among the worst for recycling, so I am happy to see that this has recycled content and is recyclable.
The company states that Product not tested on animals, which of course is always a good thing. However, it just refers to the product and not the whole company. Clairol or Proctor & Gamble - is a company that engages in animal testing, so ingredients of this shampoo may have been tested on animals, just not the final product. I always like to be an educated consumer. More info can be found at:

Although this doesnt seem like the most friendly product in terms of ingredients or the company, the product has some good attributes:
- Uses high quality ingredients derived from pure renewable plant sources - no animal by-products.
- Herbs grown under certified organic conditions - no petrochemicals or pesticides.
- Biodegradable formula.
Overall
I cant say I have any complaints about this shampoo. It smells great, does a good job, and leaves my hair looking and feeling good. I dont know what makes this a clarifying shampoo over others. Maybe it has more detergents or it is just like any other shampoo. However, I really like the results and think that this makes a great maintainence shampoo for me. I will continue to purchase this product because I love what it does for my hair.
