Looking for a way to battle both allergies and sinus congestion? Claritin-D offers relief from allergies and unclogs and dries out your sinuses for 24 hours at a clip.
Claritin-D offers 24-hour relief for people who suffer from allergies and sinus congestion. It does this by combining Loratadine (an antihistamine) and Pseudoepherdrine sulfate (a nasal decongestent).
Details
The two active ingredients in Claritin-D are the Loratadine and the Pseudoepherdrine sulfate. The inactive ingredients include carnuba wax, dibasic calcium phosphate, ethylcellulose, hydroxyypropyl cellulose, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, pharmaceutical ink, polyethylene glycol, povidone, silicon dioxide, sugar, titanium dioxide and white wax.
Like the original Claritin, Claritin D will reduce or eliminate most symptoms of allergies including runny nose, sneezing, and itchy and watery eyes. Claritin-D however, with the addition of the decongestant is also able to relieve sinus pain and pressure and lets your breath through your nose.
Claritin-D offers 24 hour relief for allergies and sinus congestion. The dosage consists of a single pill once every 24 hours. There are no limitations on taking the pill, you can take it before or after you eat and you can take it without eating at all.
Warnings
There are a few warnings on Claritin-D that people should be aware of:
If youve ever taken Loratadine (the antihistamine that makes up Claritin) and had an allergic reaction, dont take Claritin-D because it contains the same antihistamine.
Do not take Claritin-D if you are currently taking a prescription MAOI drug or have taken such a drug in the last two weeks.
If you suffer from heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, diabetes, have an enlarged prostrate, or have liver and/or kidney disease, you should consult your doctor before taking Claritin-D. Take this to heart and do not take it before you have consulted your doctor. I have high blood pressure and I am on medication for it. I took Claritin-D and I thought I was as high as a kite. The decongestant (all decongestants actually) raise your blood pressure, so if its high to start with, after you take the Claritin-D, it could be stratospheric and you will suffer the consequences that include feeling light-headed, nervousness, and/or dizziness. Its a disconcerting feeling so please check with your doctor to see if you should take Claritin-D if you have any of the above mentioned health problems.
Side effects are generally mild, but most people (including myself) experience some amount of a dry mouth feeling after taking it. Be prepared with some chapstick and drink plenty of water.
My Experiences
My allergies tend to manifest in a seriously congested nose and therefore a few years ago, my doctor prescribed Claritin-D for me (back when it was still a prescription). It worked miracles not only could I breath clearly, but the sneezing and itchy and watery eyes were gone. The 24-hour period of relief is no exaggeration either generally I would have no relapses as long as I kept up the 24-hour regimen.
Once Claritin-D went to a non-prescription I continued to use it during the peaks of allergy season. However, once I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and starting taking medication for it, I had to stop taking the Claritin-D and instead take plain old Claritin. I miss the decongestant abilities of Claritin-D (I miss decongestants in general), but if I take a smaller dose as my doctor suggested when it gets really bad (the congestion that is), then it does provide some relief.
Final Thoughts
Claritin-D can be a godsend for people who have allergies that manifest themselves in congested sinuses. Shortly after taking it, you will begin to notice the difference and will have 24 hours of relief.
Be careful if you suffer from certain medical conditions, but in general, Claritin-D is one of the best combination allergy/sinus-congestion medicines that you can get.
