| Barefooter's Full Review: Coastal Pet No Slip Collar |
Kaycie, our West Highland White Terrier, is an escape artist. When she was a puppy, she tried every means possible to slip out of the house and roam the neighborhood. For a long time, commands meant nothing to her.
Stay? Whaddya mean stay? There's a rabbit out there and I want him!
We had several episodes during her first year where she would take off running if anyone so much as cracked a door open without checking to see where she was. The neighbors quickly learned to join the "Hunt for Kaycie" cause on a regular basis.
One of the most valuable things in our possession is the Coastal Pet No-Slip Collar. Made of sturdy, yet comfortable nylon, this 5-inch diameter collar flexes about a half-inch when the leash is loose. This flexible collar quickly taught her to stop lunging at the leash if she wanted to walk without the leash tightening around her neck. The collar fits small- to medium-sized dogs and can be easily adjusted for size. The collar is made of two pieces of three/fourth-inch nylon. One piece surrounds the dog's neck and the other piece joins the collar together with two slip rings. A third ring attaches to the leash. The collar loosens or tightens by shortening or lengthening the nylon between the two rings. If the leash is pulled, the nylon tightens up. When the leash is loose, the collar loosens up.
It is important to make sure that the collar is fitted properly to make sure that the dog cannot back away and loosen the collar. We learned this the hard way when Kaycie was a puppy. She got loose from this collar because we left more than a half-inch of room around her neck.
It is not recommended to leave this collar on the dog during the day due to the danger of snagging it and choking. We always remove this collar after a walk and hang it up with the leash. Kaycie always associates this collar with a pleasant walk, so she happily slips it over her head whenever she hears, "Want to go for a walk?"
At $5.99, this was the best investment for our escape artist. The collar can be tossed in the washer or hand-washed. The nylon cleans easily. It is available in several bright colors-- we chose the bright blue. It is a nice contrast to Kaycie's white fur and her beautiful brown eyes. The other dogs in the neighborhood definitely sit up and take notice when she's wearing this collar. One can just hear the male dogs checking her out:
"Hey babe, nice collar! Did your owner get it at that fancy pet store in town?"
