I have 2 Cobra Microtalk 1 (Model FRS-100) radios. I picked them up one day at Dick's Sporting goods for $79. I saw a label on the package that said 'up to 2 miles' I thought, 'no way', so I basically bought them to try out and ended up being totally shocked. They're clear not only to 2 miles, but I've been able to have conversations with people almost 4 miles away!
I actually got in my car one day and drove off till it stopped working 4 miles away! Not bad, ... when will they come up with 'free' cell phones that work like this? You buy it and that's the only cost you have! Motorola, pick up on this!
I once used the Microtalk 1 at HersheyPark, I was there with friends and we split into a couple groups so we could do what we wanted to do, the girls went to the giftshop, the guys on the roller coaster, guess what? we didn't have to rush back to a 'meeting place' because all we had to do was call when we were ready, I think that's the best use of this product. Also, I purchased from Cobra's website, nicad batteries and a charging stand to keep me from going broke buying batteries, it was $30 for each battery pack and for the charger but well worth it considering the fact that you'd spend $6 each time you had to get duracell's anyway. I recommend the charger and nicad for anyone with this that's planning on using it more than once every month or so.
This is also especially good for family events, at the park, at the mall, anywhere you'll be seperated.
These little radios are very nice and you can get lots of accessories for them if you like, they're the next best thing to cell phones for short distance and cost nothing to operate! Every family should have a couple.... or 6!
