gamblin_man's Full Review: Commando Grinding Wheel Dresser with Flat Diamond ...
A grinding wheel can be casually dressed or dressed formally. I chose the formal dress when I purchased a Woodcraft 8 Grinder. To do this you need a formal wheel dresser. Many grinders come equipped with a rectangular stone for truing the face of the grinding wheel. This works fine for casual work. But for good white wheels you need something better. The Commando Grinding Wheel Dresser was what I chose for my grinding wheel formal wear.
The wheel dresser is a pretty simple tool. It has a hollow rectangular end that looks something like a small hammer attached to a knurled metal handle for holding it. One face of the rectangle, though, is quite formal, being impregnated with diamond chips to make a 35 grit flat grinding surface. Using it is equally simple. With the tool rest close to the face of the spinning wheel you hold the diamond surface at right angles to the face of the wheel. You press it slowly against the spinning surface until you have a perfectly flat face and perfectly round wheel. With time and use, the wheel will get some of the metal it has ground imbedded in its surface and may get out of shape from uneven grinding. Just place the wheel dresser into service again and the wheel will be ready for more formal affairs. Diamonds may be a girls best friend, but in this application they are the friend of sharpeners too.
