My computer lab, that I work at in Pullman, Washington, recently purchased 10 sets of the Labtec LCS-800 Speakers. These have been pretty good speakers, and I decided to write about them, because they have treated us very well and seem like they will last for a long time to come as well. Sometimes you will come across speakers that only will work some of the time, but these ones are the "cat's meow" when it comes to computer speakers that do not cost an arm and a leg.
The speaker's themselves (they are sold in a pair), Have 3 buttons built on to one of them in the set. The 3 buttons consist of: the power button of course, the bass button, and a treble button. When the button is pushed in, the given task is executed, and when it is depressed the given task is turned off. When the speaker's are turned on, they take over full volume control from the computer so that it goes solely through them. This is nice, because you do not have to worry about sound coming from the computer at the same time. One of the bonuses about the sound itself, is that you can have more than one program running at a time that generates sound, and it will still come out clear.
The speaker's are about 8 inches tall, and 4 inches wide. They fit very nicely on either side of the computer, and help it to look more presentable, and professional. On the back side of the speaker's there are also plug-ins. On the left-input speaker there is one plug-in, which leads to the 2nd speaker. On the 2nd speaker (the right-side one), there are 3 plug-ins. One of them links the two speakers, the second one goes into the back of the computer into the sound card, and the 3rd one connects to a electrical plug-in that goes into any 2 or 3 pronged outlet. I know this may seem like a lot of cords, but they fit nicely behind the computer itself.
We use these speakers on IBM's, and Gateways, but it is my understanding that they can also be used on Mac's is the user finds this necessary. The sound quality works better on the gateways though, and I must recommend making sure that you turn down the sound when you are done using the computer for the night. The worst experience, is walking in, turning the computer on, and having the windows start-up music blare out at you. Because this is an internal sound, it gets magnified by these speakers every single time that the computer gets turned on.
The speakers also have the ability to have several things changed about the sound quality that they submit. Through the volume controls of your computer, you can change the Volume Control Balance, the CD balance, the Wave Balance, the Synthesizer Balance, the Microphone Balance, the Line Balance, the Auxiliary Balance, the Video Balance, and the Modem Balance as well. For every one of these options you are also able to change the amount of bass and treble that come out of them.
These are very nice speakers, and I feel that I have to recommend them to anyone that is thinking about getting a set for their computer. They are not only nice ones to have in the office, but if I had a choice, I would have a set of these at my own personal computer as well. Just do not forget to turn them down when you are done. :)
