In a kitchen full of gadgets, I must admit I have a fondness for those things that perform multiple functions. My food processor, for example, is superb at grating things and can be used in making doughs. My melon baller doubles as an apple corer and (in a pinch) a butter curler. Then there are those tools that serve only one function. My snail tongs are such a tool.
Although I'm a vegetarian, I still will make animal products for people I love. One of those people, Mario, loves snails. I made them once long ago for him, and now it's his favorite meal. So, if around his birthday I am solvent, I make him snails.
One of the problems with eating snails is getting the meat out of the shell. This should be an elegant operation. After all, meals that include escargot tend to be elegant. Without the right tools, however, the procedure of muscling them out is anything but elegant.
These snail tongs solve that problem. They are made in single piece construction. The ends are spoon shaped and designed to hold the shell firmly in place while with a dainty snail fork the eater gets at the meat of the matter. The fork comes with the tongs.
This function is the only thing these short tongs are good for. The good news is that they are very good for that function. If you are going to try fixing escargot at home, I suggest investing in snail tong and fork for every place setting. Either that or get the camera ready for the pictures of your guests struggling with the snails while trying to maintain their manners.
