| jentnews's Full Review: Coppertone Oil Free Sunblock |
Lately, I’ve become a fanatic about sun protection. Extensive reading of skin-care magazine articles combined with a healthy dose of paranoia have caused me to become very concerned about the effects of sun exposure on my extremely fair skin. So a few months ago, I began using Oil of Olay’s moisturizer/sunscreen blend on my face and neck. But I noticed that my skin was still a bit ruddy, particularly on my nose, cheeks and shoulders. I needed something stronger than Olay’s SPF 15.
But what to do? Lots of sunscreens on today’s drugstore shelves have SPFs of 30 or more, but most of them contain oils, fragrances and other things that would threaten to irritate my skin or cause a nasty breakout. So I was especially delighted to discover Coppertone Oil Free Faces Hydrating Sunblock, SPF 30, during a recent sojourn to Walgreens. And after almost two weeks of using the product on a daily basis, I can say that I’ll definitely be buying more.
Coppertone Oil Free Faces claims to be “non-comedogenic,” or unlikely to clog pores and cause pimples. As someone with oily skin, I agree with this statement. I smooth on the white, creamy lotion every day before applying makeup, and it has not made my skin any more oily than it already is. The product blends smoothly into the skin, leaving little if any traces of shine behind. Despite being purported as “fragrance-free,” I detected a pleasant scent when applying the lotion – but it’s so light that it’s unlikely to bother those with sensitive skin.
True to its claim, the product also has hydrating qualities. It moisturizes so well that I have stopped using my normal Oil of Olay; it keeps skin supple, but in a non-greasy kind of way. The tube also says that the lotion contains “antioxidant vitamins A and E.” Not being a dermatologist, I can’t tell you if these vitamins are beneficial when applied topically, but I guess it can’t hurt.
Coppertone Oil Free Faces is also water-resistant, which is fortunate if you’re applying it prior to a trip to the beach or the neighborhood pool.
But does it work? Sure. In the two weeks that I have used it, I’ve noticed that my face, neck and shoulders have lost some of their reddish tints and grown paler, which is exactly what I was hoping for. The sunblock uses “advanced broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection,” meaning that it screens out both kinds of rays. Its main active ingredient is avobenzone, or Parsol 1789 – not PABA, which can irritate many skin types.
Coppertone Oil Free Faces Hydrating Sunblock comes in a 3-ounce tube, so it’s easy to tuck into your beach bag (or purse, in my case; I often wash my face at work). It’s a bit expensive – I paid about $8.99 for that small tube – but it can be purchased at drugstore.com for $6.99 right now.
