| lilsquibb's Full Review: Cosco Nod-a-Way Toddler Bed 10-B01 |
There comes a time for every mom that you have to face the transition from baby to big kid. One big transition is moving to a big kid bed. Knowing we would soon need the crib when brother arrives, we began thinking about a new bed and how to shift to it. Unfortunately, we did not have the option of converting our crib into a toddler bed, so when a friend offered a free one we were more than happy to accept.
We made the transition just before Thanksgiving this year when my son was just over two years old. I wanted to wait a little longer but, since he decided he no longer wanted to fall asleep in his crib it was actually an act of desperation to try to get him to fall asleep somewhere besides the middle of the floor.
Can Plastic be Stylish?
Cosco's Nod-a-Way Toddler Bed has a heavy duty plastic frame, with metal bars across the bottom. The bed takes a standard crib mattress, which means you can use the same crib bedding if you so choose. This was nice for my son so he could have a piece of his old bed with him in the new bed. The bed in a nice white color that will go with most decor, but it is plastic. I worried about the way it would blend at first but it seems to be alright since it has a pretty nice look to it.
The bed is styled like a mini-sleigh bed, standing less than a foot total (mattress included) off the floor. The Nod-a-Way frame has a plastic headboard, foot board and partial side rails. Each of these four pieces is molded to look like it has "rails", I guess for styling. Both the headboard and footboard are rounded on top to create a sleigh bed look. The headboard stands approximately two feet tall and the footboard about 18 inches. The side rails cover roughly 18 inches from the headboard down, leaving about 2 1/2 feet of exposed sleeping space. Little Man immediately had to place a pillow at the head of the bed (just like daddy's) and it takes up the entire space where the rails are covering. I have been pretty surprised that in the past two months my son has yet to fall out of the bed and he is an active sleeper. At least he would only fall a foot if he did happen to fall out.
Midnight Rendezvous Anyone?
This low height is something my little guy really enjoys (although mommy, at 7 months pregnant has an issue with this height). When he sits down his feet touch the floor (and he doesn't exactly have long legs), so getting in and out is very easy. Yes you read that correctly, it is easy to get out of as well. So far we have yet to have any midnight wandering around the house as I had feared would happen. At this point if he does wake at 3 AM, he comes looking for mommy first. Plus we are light enough sleepers we can hear his little feet coming across our hardwood floors. If we ever do run into an issue with this, (especially after brother arrives), a baby gate across his doorway will suffice.
No More Monkeys Jumping on the Bed
As I mentioned we did receive this second hand so we did not experience the set-up of the bed. But it is small enough that it fit up our stairs, fully together with mattress in tact. It is also light enough my husband did this himself. The Nod-a-Way can hold little ones up to 50 pounds, which I could definitely right away. I had attempted to sit down on the bed and I could tell that wasn't going to be the best option, so no snuggles in bed for this little guy as mommy wasn't going to fit. Since me son is 28 pounds at two years old, I'm sure we are going to have many more years with this little bed.
Now my son's first reaction to the bed was to get up there and start a jumpin'. Even now, no matter how hard we try, he still likes to jump on the bed. This brings about minor concerns about the construction of the bed. Every time he jumps I swear it's going to buckle under the pressure. Plus, daddy has already had to tighten the screws connecting the footboard to the bed.
Life with a Big Boy Bed
I have to say Little Man loves his big boy bed. The first night he wanted to put all his toys up in the bed to play with them and would get mad if I tried to take them off. He also got mad if I tried to put blankets on it he didn't want. He had to have just the right ones for his bed. And he did not miss the crib at all. I will say having a toddler bed has not really helped him go to sleep any better, but that's an issue that probably wouldn't have been solved no matter how cool the bed. I can tell he enjoys the new-found freedom the bed brings, especially when waking up, when he can just get up out of bed and come get us for a change.
For those with limited space, the Nod-a-Way will not take up much more room than a typical crib, although it does not sit flush to the walls. This is actually a bonus for our house since the walls tend to get cold and Little Man isn't right up against them.
So, Sleep on That
Although I'm not sure if this exact bed is available any longer, the Nod-a-Way is an economical choice at less than $40 and looks good with most other pieces of furniture. Personally, I probably would have chosen a single size bed My son could grow into, but you can pass up free. True it doesn't have any characters on it, and it's not hot pink or blue, but it's a nice subtle piece of furniture that will last the average toddler a few years.
