| chrisp339's Full Review: Creative Technology Nomad MuVo² (4 GB) MP3 Pl... |
Unlike many of the other reviewers here, I purchased the Muvo2 4 Gb player for use as a player; not to rip the drive out!
My priorities were: small size, drag and drop simplicity, ease of use, long battery life, good sound, and a user replaceable batter.
The Muvo2 is certainly small. It easily fits in my pocket. It also survived a brief drowning during a downpour in Utah (a rare event indeed). The unit also supports drag and drop, has excellent battery life (mine plays 8-10 hours), and has a user replaceable battery.
In terms of sound, it is actually better than I would have liked. I know this sounds odd, but with this player, I can actually hear the imperfections of MP3's even with the cheap earbuds that came with the player! Now, I am no audiophile and I certainly appreciate the work that was put into this unit, but now I find that the lack of good headphones really bothers me and I will have to go and purchase a good set :(
Song navigation is the exact opposite of intuitive. Basically, it sucks. If you want to shuffle and repeat all the songs, great. If you want to play a specific album. No problem. If you want 1 particular song on the fly, write me when you find it.
THe unit also does not support AAC files, the type supported by iTunes. I did not think that this was a big deal either, until I kind of got hooked.
The earphone and file type issues aside, now is a good time to buy the Muvo2 because you can find batteries for as little as $25! That is a whole lot less than replacing the ipod mini's battery ($99). Plus, Dell DJ remotes work with the Muvo2!
As for those interested in the capacity of the player, I have an adequate collection of MP3's totalling in at a meager 10 Gigs. I use roughly half of these. I have found that I have yet to even fill the Muvo with a quarter of the available space. Maybe I am just lazy. I simply don't seem to require a 10+ gig player. I suspect that I am not alone.
All in all, the Muvo2 4 gig player is a wonderful piece of tech. Is it as good as the Ipod Mini? I can't say, but the mini sure does have that bling look! The mini is also, reportedly, much easier to use to find a song or create a playlist.
UPDATE:
Apple does not replace your ipod battery for $99, they replace your ipod! This is a little different, of course, than a simple battery change. As well, with the ipod you cannot simply swap out batteries and play on for 20 hours.
The difference comes down to how you use the player and battery. If you play the thing continuously and don't charge the battery all that often, go for a player with a user replaceable battery. If you charge daily or use it only an hour or so a day (or whatever), then I would think that the ability to get an entirely new ipod three years from now for $99 is a steal!
