Pros: Great tasting coffee, easy to clean grinder thats dishwasher safe.
Cons: Kind of pricey (I used a coupon to get $20 bucks off)
The Bottom Line: Grind and Brew is fabulous and a time saver. If you love fresh coffee without the Starbucks prices and the early morning hassle this is definitely for you.
goldphishe's Full Review: Cuisinart DGB-500 12-Cup Coffee Maker
Ok, there are certain gadgets in this world that I have come to know and love as my own... Cell Phones, Tivo, iPod and my Grind and Brew by Cuisinart. For those of you who own any one of the 4 you can understand my appreciation and gratitude towards the people who made these fine products.
Ok here's some coffee background about myself so you know where I am coming from.
1. I LOVE COFFEE
2. I LOVE FRESHLY GROUND COFFEE
3. I LOVE COFFEE THAT MAKES ITSELF
As the proud owner of my first coffee grinder (circa 1998... I'm only 24), I was obsessed with buying only whole bean coffee and grinding fresh each morning before school/work... That lasted 2 weeks. Then I started grinding the night before so that all I had to do was wake up and turn on my coffee maker.... Again, a two week lifespan... Suddenly pre-ground coffee was ok if I was in a hurry (90%) of the time.
The biggest problem with my grinder? You couldn't wash the whole thing. You could wash the top, but the inside you had to brush out, which was a big pain. The second problem with my grinder was the transfer from grinder to coffee maker. I inadvertently dumped a ton of grinds each time and would wind up with brown dots of coffee everywhere.
Now I lived with this problem for 5 years. Finally my old "free" Gevalia Coffee maker was too tired to go on, so I went out and coughed up the $79.99 for my Cuisinart Grind and Brew (in black). I was able to get $20.00 off the $99.99 price at Linen's n Things with a 20% off coupon (which I recommend for anyone who likes to save money).
OK now for the basics:
Out of the box it comes with:
A charcoal water filter (replaceable and lasts for 60 uses)
A 12 cup (5 oz. per cup) glass carafe (the stainless steal thermal model goes for $150.00 - way out of my price range)
A gold metal filter (or you can use paper filters - it comes with a small supply)
A coffee scoop with brush
A 3 year warranty
Use:
The machine has multiple automated functions:
A clock
A Programmer so you can wake up to a fresh cup
The grinder on/off function so you can use whole bean or ground coffee
An automatic shut-off timer that goes from 0 minutes to 4 hours so you can keep your coffee warm on the heated plate.
An alarm that sounds when your coffee is finished brewing.
An alarm that sounds if you try to start the machine without all of the parts in place.
A 1 - 4 cup option so that when you are making smaller amounts of coffee its just as good and hot as if you made a whole pot.
Making Coffee:
The best part about this machine is the grinder. You measure out your beans into the grinding chamber, fill the water up to the desired level, close the lid, pop in a filter and press start. The machine grinds the beans while the water heats then it brews the coffee. You don't have to transfer the beans manually; they fill into the filter after they are ground automatically. This means your coffee is brewed as soon as its ground. Very Very fresh.
Cleanup:
The new carafe design with the wider mouth is not only better for pouring (I don't spill a drop) its easier for cleaning, plus you can put it in the dishwasher (top rack)
The filter lid and basket are fully removable and top rack dishwasher safe.
The grinding chambers (both lid and cup - all parts that come into contact with coffee) are fully removable and cleanable with soap and water or your dishwasher (top rack). This is amazing. My old grinder was a major pain to clean because you couldn't wash the whole thing with soap and water - let alone put it in the dishwasher.

Over all, I love this thing. I do miss my thermal carafe and I don't have the dough to spend on the more expensive model. The grinder is loud, but no more than my old grinder. I have it set the same time as my alarm, so I wake up to both :)
The coffee is phenomenal and I love that all I have to do is fill it with beans, water and a filter and its set to go. It brews while Im in the shower which is great. Saves me a ton of time.
