| felicia's Full Review: Cup and Saucer |
I used to live across the street from the Cup and Saucer and it became a part of my breakfast routine. While the art on the walls is usually pretty mediocre and the crowd on a Saturday or Sunday morning is horrendous, it is a great place for very good, unpretentious food at a decent price. Most of their dishes come with a side of home-fried potatoes (not bad) and a scone. If you order something that doesn't come with the scone then I would really recommend getting a side of scones - cooked fresh daily, they are always flaky and never too dense, the perfect vehicle for butter. Most of the dishes are a pretty standard egg scramble or omelette, and while these are usually quite good, I want to examine a few really excellent dishes that are easily overlooked.
Food: The breakfast burrito is an omelette wrapped in a huge tortilla. I don't know how they do it but the tortillas are very flavorful and filling - maybe they fry them in butter? You can opt for chilis in the egg if you want it a little spicier, plus the standard range of omelette fillers.
There is a delicious turkey, cream cheese and cranberry sauce sandwich on the menu if you are looking for a lunch choice. This is an excellent combo, always very fresh tasting.
One egg item which I frequently go for is the Mary-Anne sandwich. This is an egg cooked any way you like in some bread (your choice of english muffin, white, sourdough, wheat, or bagel) with a thin layer of cheese and either bacon or ham on top of that. If you play around with the various combinations eventually you will stumble upon your perfect sandwich. Mine was scrambled egg with cheddar cheese and bacon in sourdough bread. Heavenly.
Overall most of the entrees are quite good. If you are looking for a good desert then try the marionberry pie, especially if you aren't from Oregon. Marionberries seem to be unique to Oregon, and with a sweet and tart flavor and a firm consistency, they are great in a pie. Try it with vanilla ice cream if you're not too full.
Service: The service is usually fine. Your coffee will be refilled promptly, and as long as its not too crowded the food ought to arrive in a timely fashion. Be warned, however, that it is a very popular weekend breakfast/brunch spot, and the service tends to suffer.
The waiters and waitresses are a pretty friendly bunch. If you are having trouble deciding what to get ask one of them what's good that day.
Decor: The atmosphere here is bustling and light. If you can grab a booth, do so, as they are comfortable and attractive. A large window in the front provides plenty of natural light. The tables are a little too tightly packed so don't count on having any private conversations when the restaurant's busy. The art is for sale and changes every few months. Sometimes they get some interesting stuff but it's usually not too exciting.
