elvisdo's Full Review: DC Universe Justice League Unlimited Exclusive Act...
It's an amazing thing to naturally be born with extraordinary gifts and it's another thing to have such gifts granted to you, whether from an accident or purposefully done. Lightning Lad knows how that feels as he accidentally stumbled across his wondrous powers that eventually led to him becoming a founding member of the legendary Legion of Super-Heroes, a superhero team from the 30th Century. Now he joins the Justice League Unlimited toy series in this exclusive four-pack set offered through MattyCollector.com.
Garth Ranzz was born on the planet Winath, He is the twin brother to Ayla Ranzz, a fellow Legionnaire known as Lightning Lass, and the younger brother of Mekt Ranzz, otherwise known as the supervillain Lightning Lord. The three all received their lightning powers by accident after being attacked by creatures called lightning beasts of the world of Korbal.
Garth is part of the trio (along with Saturn Girl and Cosmic Boy) who saved the life of billionaire R. J. Brande from an assassination attempt. At the suggestion of Brande, the three formed a group called the Legion of Super-Heroes and became Earth's line of defense against threats from all over the universe. He is later romantically linked to Saturn Girl.
Lightning Lad is wearing a costume reminiscent of his Silver Age look complete with hairstyle. Originally, he sported a crew cut and had a cape but I'm glad the look was dropped in favour of this one. It's not surprising that he is much more brash and impulsive than Cosmic Boy making the lightning bolt insignia well-suited to his personality. I like how metallic gold paint was used to render the lightning bolts on the front and the back of his torso. There is also a peg hole in his right foot to put him on a display stand.
What I find to be a bit of a copout is painting the Legion flight ring on the hand instead of actually sculpting it. I can see why this is done since all the body's used are taken from generic molds. All the detailing is usually painted on for this series with some exceptions for different characters.
As with all Justice League Unlimited figures, Lightning Lad has only five points of articulation: head, shoulder and hips. It limits his movement but it also streamlines the figure without making it too bulky. Really, it's the lesser of two evils in the long run.
As part of the Legion of Super-Heroes four-pack (included with Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl and Brainiac 5), this set can only be purchased online through MattyCollector.com as an exclusive offer for its "Fan Collection" series. Even though it is sold as a set of four for $30.00, each figure is individually packaged. Lightning Lad completes the Legion's "Holy Trinity" and I'm glad that these three were selected to be part of the Justice League Unlimited toy line. It's only fitting the three founders get the spotlight first and it's made more evident with Lightning Lad's sparkling personality.
