yayapex2's Full Review: Dance Dance Revolution Ultramix 2 for Xbox
I have to admit that when I first heard of Dance Dance Revolution I thought that it was the dumbest thing in the world. I saw these little kids playing it using one foot at a time and it looked dumb. Then my friend was like, "Hey Surge, let's go to Big Top and play some DDR". He offered to pay so then I just went. I saw him go up first and he was just blazing all over the pad, it was like lightning. Since then I would go to the arcade and maybe play a game or two. For Christmas my Mom bought this bundle for me and I've been playing this quite a bit lately.
What is Dance Dance Revolution?
DDR is a popular music game that the player uses his or her feet. It also originated in Japan and is trying to take over America with it's groovy beats. The set-up for this game is pretty easy. You first take the game disc and insert it into the Xbox. Then you take your dance pad and lay it on the floor, but make sure the floor is clean. This dance pad is for you to stand on and press these buttons in. The main buttons on the pad are the UP/DOWN/LEFT/RIGHT buttons. You can then scroll through all these different songs and start playing. As you play all these arrows come up on your screen and you have to press all them in on time. These steps also go along with all the beats in the song. Once you get used to playing this, you'll keep playing until you get really tired.
The pad I got with this game was the official Konami game pad. It's a soft pad and you can fold it for easy storage. It has four arrows and one is facing forward, left, down, and right. A friend of mine told me that the spacing of the arrows on his pad were too close, but mine are just perfect. He also had a cheaper MadCatz pad. On the bottom you even have grip to prevent any slipping on solid floors. I've never used this pad on carpets and I don't know if it will slip or not. The only problem with this pad is when you play on higher skill levels. The pad might move around and then you might not hit the arrow you want, causing you to loose a combo or fail a song.
There are many different patterns of arrows that appear on the screen. On the easier difficulties you might see one arrow at a time. Then when you play on the harder difficulties, the arrows are much closer and more numerous. Sometimes you might have to step on two arrows at the same time, and these are called jumps. You might even see arrows that are extended meaning you have to hold your foot there until they're gone. These are called freeze arrows. They might not sound like much but wait until you play a song that is fast paced and has plenty of beats.
The music is pretty much what makes the game. You have some of the arcade classics like A ( D.J.Amuro ), B4U ( Naoki ), Love Shine ( Kaska Riyu ), V( Taka ), Dam Dariram ( Joga ) MAXX Unlimited ( Z ). There are also remixes of Dream a Dream ( Captain Jack ), .59 ( Jesper Kyd ), and I Feel ( T.O.Y. ). One song that a lot of people may know is Brick House ( Cammodores ), and even Elvis joins the fun with Rubberneckin'. I have to say that there are a good amount of songs that I don't play much. Out of the 70 you could possibly have I only play like 25. What's cool is that you can even bring songs that you downloaded in Ultra Mix into this one. Then plus the songs you can download for Ultra Mix 2 gives you about maybe 120 - 130 total songs. I wish that they could have put more of the songs from the arcade. Playing 25 out of the 70 songs I have doesn't sound so good, it seems like a waste of songs. Most of the songs are from people I haven't heard of and don't appeal to me and may explain why I don't play them. They are still good to play if you want to be good at different types of steps.
Graphics:
This game's menus are all bright colors. It's mostly blue and there are little things in the background. When you play the game you have arrows and they look good. You can even choose from other different types like turtles and other funky arrows. During a song you can also see a background video. Some videos have smiley face explosions, hearts that fly around, and plenty of other things. Some of the videos are too bright and may distract you. The good thing is that you can also adjust the brightness so much that it turns black.
Sound & Music:
The music is what this game is all about. You have songs that are fast paced, some with lyrics, and some that are purely beats. My favorite was G2 with it's crazy beats and constant repeating of "Get your freak on". You also have announcers that say things during game-play. When you are loosing they'll ask, "Is your tv still on?". For the most part the things they say are pretty lame and get old quick.
Summary:
DDR is one of the funnest games I've played. It's also one of the only ways I'll get a workout. Once you get used to moving around the pad you'll keep playing until your feet hurt. There are many different styles of songs that some people might like or not. DDR is just a great game and if you give it a try I'm sure you'll love it.
