| PhoenixFlight's Full Review: DeWalt 1/2" Impact Wrench DW290 |
I have had the DeWalt 1/2 Impact Wrench in my arsenal of weapons of mass construction for the better part of the last decade. Undeniably one of the best tool purchases I have ever made, I will be more than happy to be the first member of Epinions to opinionate on this item.
For the ladies of the house, God bless you all, that have obviously determined that this tool doesnt look like a normal wrench, and for the men of the world who only know impact as a portion of an automobile accident, please allow me the joy of describing the DeWalt 1/2 Impact Wrench to you.
Starting off I will explain what an impact wrench is used for. The number one use of an impact wrench is to either put on or take off nuts that are too tight to remove using a regular wrench. Im not talking about Pecans either.
Most of you would be most familiar with an impact wrench if you have ever watched your mechanic change your tires or if you are into automobile racing. This is the tool that sounds like, rrrrrrrrrpppppttttt. Basically, this tool is a combination of a hammer and a wrench.
The DeWalt 1/2 Impact Wrench is an AC/DC powered tool that delivers a maximum of 240 ft. lbs of torque in either forward or reverse. It is stronger than most tools of its type with a few feet to spare.
One of the best features of this tool is the rocker trigger that it uses. Most tools have a switch to use when switching from forward to reverse. Often times this results in having to use both hands on the tool before reversing directions. The DeWalt rocker trigger allows you to simply move your trigger finger down for forward and up for reverse. This in itself makes a job a lot easier to complete. Equally as impressive is the ease in which you can change the brushes that create the power for the tool.
While most impacts allow you to exchange sockets rather easily, just slide off and slide on, the DeWalt 1/2 Impact Wrench has an indented pin that locks your socket into place alleviating the problem of sockets falling off at the wrong moment, like for instance you are on top of a ladder.
When I first purchased this tool my chief concern was its weight. At about 7 lbs., the DeWalt 1/2 Impact Wrench seemed just a tad off balance to me. It took little time for me to get used to its weight but even less time for me to figure out that without this tool there were several jobs that I do that would take considerably longer to get done without it.
The DeWalt 1/2 Impact Wrench comes in an attractive carrying case that makes storage easier as well as lugging it out to the jobsite.
With any tool that I use durability is a major concern. For me, the DeWalt 1/2 Impact Wrench is an every day tool and the one that I currently use is the second I have purchased in the last 10 years. I often wonder if I would still be using my first if it hadn't passed me in the fast lane on Interstate 405. (Note to self: Remember to place tools in toolbox, not on top of it.)
For your average consumer this is a one time purchase that will last a lifetime. Dropping this tool from a ladder three stories in the air is as detrimental to the tool as it would be to your noggin. A drop of a few feet wont even scratch the DeWalt though.
In closing I have to say that I am as happy with my second DeWalt 1/2 Impact Wrench as I was with the first.
