Pros: Beaches, variety of activities, not yet overwhelmed by commercialism--still small town atmosphere
Cons: Way crowded during Spring Break. Very hot and humid in summer.
The Bottom Line: It really is a hidden gem--you can't help but be impressed by the beaches, and Destin offers it all.

| vlkm's Full Review: Destin |
You will not find better beaches ANYWHERE than Florida's Emerald Coast, and Destin makes them even better. As many people are discovering, Destin still offers a small town ambiance, but with all the vacation luxuries you could want. Whether it's lazing on the pure white squeaky sand beaches, cooling off in the crystal clear water, watching dolphins and rays play in the shallows, or shopping outlet malls, eating freshly-caught seafood, playing golf or deep-sea fishing--you'll find it in Destin! The town offers every level of accommodation, from camping to economy motels, to luxury condos, with prices that match. High season typically starts mid-to late March (corresponding with Spring Break) and lasts to Labor Day. My advice--the FL panhandle has ideal weather in Mar-Apr and again in Sep-Oct: Still warm, but not the oppressive humidity that exists in summer--visit during these times and the prices and crowds will be lower too. If you visit during Spring Break, expect more college folks, while in summer, you'll find more families. Winter months are usually populated with Snow Birds--those who winter in the warmer climes. Winter offers all the benefits of the other months, but it does drop into the 20s-30s at night, so you probably won't be swimming as much! If you do visit during high season, I recommend you park your car when you arrive, and walk or take shuttle buses during your stay--traffic is overwhelming during those times.
Whenever you visit, bring your swimsuits, lots of sunscreen, an appetite and your wallet. Try the local Amberjack, spend time at Big Kahuna's water park, lie out on the beach, and spend a day at the Silver Sands Outlet Mall. Catch the aquarium in Bass Pro Shop, eat at Bonefish, try a round of golf or go tuna fishing, and see how late you can stay up at Nighttown. Get a Henna Tattoo and feed the alligators at Fudpuckers. Romance your partner at Gugliamo's. Before you leave, make sure you get a group picture taken on the beach!
