outdoorsbound's Full Review: Black Diamond Half Dome Helmet
I was in need of a caving helmet and the Black Diamond Half Dome fit the bill. The helmet was designed for climbing but we cavers have to take what we can get. I first tried the Petzl Ecrin Roc but the chip straps bothered my earlobes. The chin straps on the Half Dome adjust enough to eliminate this problem. It has a much lower profile than that of the Ecrin Roc as well which makes it an even better helmet for caving. It also happens to be lighter and more affordable so I'm not going to complain about that. I do a little climbing as well so it's going to be an all-around good buy.
It's too early too say how it will hold up over time but I trust that since it's from Black Diamond that it will do just fine.
I really like how it feels on my head, it's low profile, the fact that it's lightweight, and that it's at a good price point. So far I haven't found anything wrong with it.
I haven't used it out in the field yet but I plan to take it out this weekend for a little rappelling and caving, some more caving next month, and then some more this summer. I'm sure it will do just fine.
I bought this helmet because it was the best I could find for caving.
