Dimetapp struggles on...

Pros: No Phenylpropanolamine in the new formula. Clears congestion and runny nose. Non-drowsy formula
Cons: Pseudoephedrine--can cause very excitable kids. Grape taste is not enough to cover the medicine taste.
The Bottom Line: The new formula without Phenylpropanolamine is safer for children. This works well enough, but it's expensive. The pseudoephedrine causes excitability. Read the warning lables.

Despite the new formula without the Phenylpropanolamine which has been noted to cause stroke in young children, Dimetapp continues to offer a variety of cough and cold products over the counter. The newest release has helped my 6 year old with her cold and allergy symptoms especially during the school day.
The new formula consists of:
Active ingredients:
Brompheniramine maleate...antihistamine
Dextromethorphan HBr......cough suppressant
Pseudoephedrine HCl.......Nasal decongestant
Inactive ingredients:
artificial flavor, citric acid, FD&C blue no 1, FD&C red no. 40, glycerine, high fructose corn syrup, propylene glycol, saccharin sodium, sodium benzoate, sorbitol, and water.
Read the box! The warnings are rather extensive for this type of product. And after Dimetapp's problems with Phenylpropanolamine, it's no wonder. As a mom who likes natural care, herbs and herbal remedies, this is not my favorite product. But, there are times...when I give in to symptom relief no matter what...is this so horrible? I was satisfied with the previous formula, but I'm no chemist, and the damage was done. So, now I am a bit more cautious. We continue to get Dimetapp because it's the only one with grape flavor. My child is extremely allergic to the red elixirs (vomits as soon as it hits her tummy) but this one stays down.
Talk about chemical soup! And for this I paid $4.97 for a 4 oz bottle (with a convenient dosage cup included) at Wal-Mart. It's expensive! It works better than some of the other decongestants I have tried. It tastes better than most, and Rosie is not allergic to the coloring in this one. Believe me, we've tried quite a few.
