DK books (and CDs) are a given at our house, even though there's not a kid in sight.

I rather expect the conservatism is to keep kids who use their encyclopediae as references out of scholarly trouble. After all, we wouldn't want little Johnny saying something cutting edge and embarrassing the teacher, would we?
