| rrig5's Full Review: El Cholo |
Though I enjoy eating Mexican food, I don't get to eat it too often, as I live in a small town with no Latino population (Chi Chi's is our best option). So on a recent visit to LA, I definitely wanted to eat some good, authentic, Mexican cuisine. My sister, who lives in LA, recommended El Cholo as a place the whole family could enjoy. It did not disappoint.
Though we were a party of 7, we were seated almost immediately, and received our drinks and chips and salsa very quickly. I was a bit disappointed in the mildness of the salsa. I would have liked something with a little more bite to it.
The margaritas were touted all over the menu as "LA's finest," and I have to admit, they were indeed quite tasty. I had mine on the rocks as opposed to blended and it was delicious.
I decided to be daring and try the green corn tamale and the chile relleno and the chile relleno. I had never had a chile relleno before and the way my sister described it it sounded kind of like a giant jalapeno popper, so I went for it. I must say I was disappointed because it came surrounded by an eggy mixture and I hate eggs. I wish I'd had warning. The tamale was excellent, though.
My sister got burned for being adventurous, too. She ordered a 9-vegetable combo that they bragged about on the menu without naming the 9 vegetables. Well, one of them was beets! Who'd have thought? She was pretty grossed out and picked them all off.
All the other food was great- nachos, beans, rice, tacos, extremely hot sizzling fajitas and other items enjoyed by our party.
The ambience is fun- lots of signed celeb photos (REAL celebs such as Jack Nicholson, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney), the waitresses wear flowery Mexican dresses.
The food all came quickly and at very reasonable prices. All in all, it was a great experience and I hope to return the next time I go to LA.
