Pros: Adjustable gameplay, cinematic openings, improved AI, great feel.
Cons: Unrealistic at times, controls are a little "sticky".
The Bottom Line: Any other hockey game can't compare to the likes of this. EA has proven again and again why it is the hockey enthusiasts choice for gameplay.
Much improvement from Electronic Arts's NHL 2001 model here. New storylines have been added to give gameplay a different feel. The clutch saves by the goalie, the dominating offense, the tension in a possible shutout and much more. Highlighting events from long ago in the game, these can bring nore emotion to the game, especially in multiplayer.
I love playing the season, adding a personalized character of myself to my team. And surprisingly this time I didn't do that at all. The teams have a likeness that can only be matched by watching the game. Goalies challenging the breakaway, new cameras (a great breakaway cam that goes beat for beat with the breakaway-er's heart), line changes and coaching strategies. Not to mention the computer's adaptation to your gameplay. Each player's talents are accentuated in the game, got a big shooter from the point? don't be afraid to slap a shot or a one-timer. Down by a goal, need a goal to win, heroes can help you get that clutch goal.
With all the likeness of real hockey added to the computer environment, it really brings out the game. The emotion, the chanting, the dramatic last second comebacks, are all made better in this latest release.
