Let's not be afraid of the words: printers are a pain! I'm sure that any specialist will tell you so. They jam, handled without care and here goes the toner on the floor, they print when they feel like it... Of course, at home, when there is no network, it's less likely to happened, although I get disconnected whenever I print online...
The Epson Stylus Photo 1200 is good. Honestly, since I bought it, I have never ever experienced any kind of trouble. Being also a designer and my brother a student in architecture, we print a lot! The colors are perfect and if you configure well before printing, you get practically exactly what's on the screen.
About the photos, if you use the correct paper, you will be surprised about the quality of the results. If you have a digital camera, forget about developing your films... do it at home.
The ink last a while. I know that some printers just suck up all the ink after three printouts. But the Epson Stylus Photo 1200 seems to last longer. The ink is not too expensive anyway.
Finally, it is a good idea to buy Epson anyway because their website is well done and it is very easy to update drivers...
