Good Review, Comments (Reply to this comment)
by lentulus
Good review, and I enjoyed reading the comments as well, esp. those about the relative prevalence of various enforcement tools.
I, too, am looking at "biting the bullet" and joining the laser-shifter/jammer affray. But we're at an inflection point; the older shifters/jammers are showing "jam"/"error" codes to the newer guns from Laser Atlanta (often used in the SE states) and Stalker (from Dallas). The Stalker in particular was reviewed in 2005 and the comment was made that ALL laser-jammers in the test, including the Lidatek and Blinder models that have been "said" to be less prone to do so, gave the Stalker gun a "jam" code. Very not-good, as it is liable to irritate that bear with the demonstration of smartass factor -- almost as bad as trying to show off by achieving a "jam to gun". Yeah, impress them like that. That's smart.
But so many police are using LIDAR, and LIDAR gives so little/zero warning, so that "something" seems to be needed to get that extra four or five seconds of brake-pedal time. (A magic switch to turn off brake lights, like the Los Angeles late-night exoticar "mambo"-running crowd like to fit to their Lamborghinis and Ferrari Enzos?)
I'm waiting for a rumored follow-on model to the BEL and Escort laser "shifters". They need one, their current products are looking long in the tooth, and the Blinders and Lidateks are blowing them away, performancewise. (And part of the performance is.....unobtrusiveness, as in discretion, stealth, and "I'm not really here".)

One last thing (Reply to this comment)
by sristich
Since I live in Jersey I routinely drive through a variety of States (PA, NY & CT). FYI, NY State troopers are using Laser (almost exclusively) and KA.
CT Troopers - KA (some K)
PA Troopers - KA (some K)
NJ Troopers - X (almost exclusively), with Laser on the Garden State Parkway.
I also once sent my 8500 back to Escort for "testing" because I was unhappy with the range against a NJ State Trooper using "X".
I got a letter from Escort telling me that the detector was working perfectly and that I should "ALWAYS" use my detector in "HIGHWAY" mode.

Excellent review... (Reply to this comment)

Great review, great exchange of information.
I'm writing a comment here prior to updating my review of the Passport 8500 which I've had now for about 1.5 years. See my review here... http://www.epinions.com/content_129467911812
I'm going to update my review with my latest venture through upstate New York.
About a month ago I was driving through Syracuse (South on I-81). I had been coming back from a trip to Canada. On the way to Canada, I got tagged TWICE with Laser (neither warning was sufficient) but I wasn't going fast enough to warrant a ticket I guess.
However, on my trip back home, as I'm going through Syracuse, I was driving rather carelessly. In the City of Syracuse the speed limit on I-81 drops from 65 to 55 throughout the city.
I kind of fell into a daze. Before long I was travelling 81mph. As I came over a slight hill, WAMMO, Laser alert going wild. I SLAM THE BRAKES. TOO LATE!!!
Cop, no more than 100 feet in front of me. Points at me and tells me to pull over. I do so.
I tell him that my wife (who was 7.5 months pregnant) needs to get to a bathroom really quick and I didn't want to stop in Syracuse for fear of getting lost (it was the best I could come up with on short notice).
Believe it or not, he let me off, with "driver not wearing seatbelt". $25 fine $50 surcharge.
Moral of the story... depending on where you live, don't think your detector (not Escort or V1) is not going to save you from a well placed Laser gun.
I may bite the bullet and get a laser jammer considering the fact that NY State Troopers are almost EXCLUSIVELY using laser guns.

Great job the this Escort X50 review Liz, I hope this little box will save you money in the future.
I've ridden quite a few times in a friends car with his old-style 8500, and I could never pass up my Valentine 1 for an Escort. The combination of directional arrows and bogey counter really makes that ugly black box worthwhile. I've was nearly caught twice since I purchased my V1 by Highway Patrol coming up an onramp from behind. Since I saw a sudden burst of activity and a rear arrow I knew to ease over instead of tapping my brakes, both times I blended into traffic with no problems.
Anyway, I'll shut up about the almighty V1, I'm sure you considered it when detector shopping.
All the best, and drive safe out there... it's a jungle!

Re: NC Highway Patrol still uses X band (Reply to this comment)

Interesting... I live in Winston-Salem and have never seen a NC trooper using X. I travel to Greensboro on I-40 quite often, too. Thanks for stopping by

NC Highway Patrol still uses X band (Reply to this comment)
by t_r_c
Turn your x band detection ON if you are travelling the NC interstates and want to avoid a ticket. Between Greensboro and Raleigh on I-40, I have encountered State Troopers using x band several times.
I once passed a driver pulled over by a Trooper and sitting in the windshield was a radar detector. I wondered if they had x band disabled or if they were pulled over for some other reason.
I do encounter K and ka band a bit more often but don't discount x-band when driving in NC.

"I'll dress up and play the part of the officer, and we can spend, oh, two, four, eight hours practicing with you sitting in your car with the shortest skirt you can find (with underwear totally optional, of course) and I deciding whether youer act's any good."
Jack you are so sweet, trying to help me out and all ~tear~ And you don't even care if I wear underwear, now that is what I call a real trooper (pun intended).
Thanks for the laugh..

About the short skirts...
My friend's friend is gay and always gets off real easy. He was speeding without his seatbelts while having some marijewana in the car, and he got a measly ticket for speeding. That's it. They don't want to be accused of discriminating against him.
One of the many reasons why we should make friends with all kinds of people!

Re: Crying and short skirts (Reply to this comment)

Ha! I couldn't resist using the crying and short skirt expression. I think I could probably perform a good crying act, but don't think I could let myself wear a short skirt. Thanks for stopping by.

Crying and short skirts (Reply to this comment)
by counsel
I can't believe the short skirt didn't help. Maybe it was dark and he couldn't see those golden-tan thighs, so don't give up on the leg action just yet. Skirts and skin lotion are cheaper than radar detectors. Not that I would know personally.
