Color Coding Files with Pendaflex Burgundy Hanging Folders

Sometimes color makes it easier to locate specific files. And for files that include small pieces of paper and that see a lot of handling, the Pendaflex Burgundy Reinforced Hanging Folders with InfoPocket are an office essential.
Description
These letter-size hanging file folders measure 11 5/8" wide x 9 3/8" high. Both the inside and the outside of the folders are smooth. About 3 3/8" from the top, an embossed line runs horizontally across both sides of the folder.
Each folder has a clear poly-laminate at the top and bottom edges. The paper at the top edges of the folder is folded to form a sleeve that a coated white metal bracket slides through. This bracket extends a 1/2" from both sides of the file folder and is designed to fit over the rails of a hanging file folder rack. On the top inside of the two folder edges are slots to insert a plastic file tab. The clear poly-laminate material covers 3/4" from the top outside edge of the folder and wraps to the inside of the folder to cover the slots, adding reinforcement to the slots so that they are less likely to rip.
The bottom of each file folder also has this clear poly-laminate material. It starts 7/8" from the bottom of the folder and wraps around the bottom to reach 7/8" up the other side of the folder.
An "InfoPocket" is located inside the folder. This pocket is located on one side of the folder and is constructed from stiff paper. The pocket measures 11 5/8" wide x 3 1/2" high. The actual usable space inside the pocket is 10" wide x 3 1/8" high.
To make finding papers easier, the manufacturer has colored the interior of the folder a lighter burgundy color. The outside of the folder is a matte burgundy color, and where the clear poly-laminate material covers the folder, the burgundy color looks glossy.
Each box contains 25 file folders. These file folders also come with plastic file folder tabs that are a light see-through burgundy color to coordinate with the burgundy file folders. There are also white paper inserts that go inside the plastic tabs.
The manufacturer states these file folders are constructed from 10% post-consumer recycled fibers. If you need other colors besides burgundy, these folders come in a variety of colors.
My Experiences
Each year the company I work for produces several print catalogs. I keep a file folder dated by year, and in each file folder keep a set of catalogs for that year. Since I have many file folders containing various pieces of information pertaining to my job, I use the burgundy hanging file folders for the catalogs. That way, at a glance, I know which file folders in the drawer contain
the catalogs.
Since catalogs weigh heavy, I make sure to use these Pendaflex hanging folders to hold them. The reinforced bottom adds support, and the folders I have used for years look great. The poly-laminate keeps the file folder paper from ripping or wearing through use.
One problem I have experienced is that occasionally the metal brackets become damaged so that they no longer hold the folders on the filing cabinet rails. I don’t know what causes this. The most recent file folder to fail had one of the metal brackets jammed so that one of the metal ends was trapped inside the file folder sleeve. I tried wiggling and shoving the bracket, applying pressure to no avail. That bracket would not move. I had to throw away the file folder.
The InfoPocket in these folders comes in handy. The pocket is great for holding small pieces of paper such as notes or additional photographs. Sometimes I keep a computer disk in the pocket, but as a rule, mostly paper resides in the InfoPocket of the folders I use. The pockets are pretty durable as long as they are not abused. They will rip if enough force is applied to them.
These coated metal brackets slide well on the filing cabinet rails. I also like the fact that the plastic tabs that fit in the slots located at the top inside of the folders can be staggered to easily display the tabs on the folders. Since the plastic tabs are tinted with a see-through burgundy color, it helps to immediately identify which folders contain the catalogs. The poly-laminate reinforcement around these slots also prevents the slots from ripping, as they have done on other brands of folders.
White paper tabs come with the plastic tabs. I have written on these paper inserts in both pen and permanent marker as well as typing on them. I can see the print through the tinted plastic tabs without problem. The back of the plastic tabs are indented a bit on each side to allow the paper inserts to more easily slide into the plastic tabs.
The manufacturer states that these file folders have ten times the durability of traditional folders since Pendaflex has reinforced these folders with poly-laminate. I agree. These file folders are showing very little wear ... many of them look like new despite years of use.
Purchasing
These burgundy Pendaflex file folders are available at Office Depot for $11.66 for a box of 25 folders. Office Depot also sells other colors if you are interested in variety.
Summary
These Pendaflex Burgundy Reinforced Hanging Folders with InfoPocket work well for me. If I had my choice, I would prefer that the office supply administrator would only order these file folders. These folders last a long time despite the occasional glitch when a metal bracket decides to malfunction. When it comes to storing my print catalogs, these Pendaflex folders do the job!
