rshiroma's Full Review: Eureka 431A Optima Bagless Upright Vacuum
We purchased this vacuum for its small size and apparent power but in actual use, it turned out to be one of the worst ones we bought.
First, if you have specialty carpets like berbers or thick cut pile, this supposedly lightweight machine was a hassle to push forward. It felt like it had brakes on all the time.
The second problem was its messy dust tank. I know that bagless systems are rather filthy on maintenance, but this one was horrible. The small filter has many plastic protrusions that attach it to the dust cap as well as a wind diverter to create the vortex action inside the cannister. These plastic pieces catch all sorts of ugly hila monsters and makes the filter uncleanable even though the instructions say you can wash it up to three times. Furthermore, if you attempt to actually rescue the filter, you need to re-attach it properly so that the wind diverter is aligned with the cannister intake. If improperly installed, the vortex action will not work which is what keeps most of the dust away from the filter. You will then have a quickly clogged filter and a vacuum that sprays dust back into the air.
The third problem is the forward exhaust vent located right above the vacuum intake. This design causes the vacuum to become a blower when it nears a wall or a corner. The dust vanishes, but not into the vacuum.
There is only one positive thing - it stores very easily in the corner of a closet.
