What I remember most about my childhood was visits to my grandparents in Atlanta was going to breakfast at Evans' Fine Foods. This was where I was introduced to the wonderful world of real, southern grits. This is the only restaurant I have ever been to that makes grits the right way, cooking them in salt.
My friends from the midwest look at me like I am absolutely out of my mind whenever I order grits at a restaurant, and, I have to say, I am beginning to agree with them. One would think that, in Louisiana, they would know how to make grits properly, but they just don't. I haven't been to Evans' in many years, but it remains the bright spot of visiting my grandparents as a child.
