| Prepoia's Full Review: Farberware FCP512S 12-Cup Coffee Maker |
The way others are "wine experts", I am a "coffee expert". I love coffee! "The best part of waking up is..." describes my mornings exactly. After drinking all kinds of coffee from all kinds of machines my all time favorite way to brew a cup is with a percolator. I've tried drip machines, but for a full-flavored cup of coffee percolators make the best.
When I first got married, lots and lots of years ago, I received a Farberware Electric Percolator for a wedding gift. As one of my Hudson's registered gifts, it was expensive but it enabled me to make good coffee even as a bride. It also lasted a long time, about 15 years.
By that time, the only recommended kind of coffee maker was the highly advertised, Mr. Coffee. So I bought one. Although I believe that any kind of coffee is better than no coffee, it just didn't taste the same. I tried the kind with filters. I tried buying the already filled packets. I tried everything except the logical thing...buy a different kind of coffee maker.
So I threw it out (actually, knowing me, it's in a cupboard somewhere) and replaced it with a GE Coffee Percolator. The GE worked fine and the coffee tasted terrific again. However, the GE didn't last as long (but of course I didn't pay as much either) as I'd hoped, as when I replaced it I spent the bucks and returned to a Farberware. I am a happily sipping my brew as I write this. :)
Cleaning the pot is essential to a good tasting brew. My percolator is immersible which makes it easy to keep clean and not worry about getting water into sensitive parts. Also, about once a month, I run through a cycle using white vinegar which cleans all the greasy residues. I found it impossible to clean out the residues from the drip type coffee maker that I had. I will admit that occasionally you get a few of the grounds included in your cup, but that only happens when I'm in a hurry and somewhat miss part of the basket when filling it with coffee. It is not the fault of the coffee maker.
Some people also say that they taste a "metal" or tinny taste to the coffee; but I never have. I even have a huge "100" cup Farberware percolator that I use for family gatherings and parties and no one has ever complained. It produces the same great taste that my daily smaller model delivers.
Percolated coffee just gives the best flavor and strength to coffee. I also like that it is smaller and takes up much less counter space than the drip units and when not in use can be stored out of sight.
Another factor of great coffee is the kind you use. I love Folger's Columbian brand best of all. Fancy, flavored coffees are another topic but when you want a brew to wake you up and take you through the morning, percolator coffee is what to choose. And Farberware makes one of the best.
