H_S_Thompson's Full Review: Hunter S. Thompson - Fear and Loathing: On the Cam...
If you want a serious, in depth analysis of the 1972 election, it is here. If you crave a funny, esoteric, twisted story about a cross-country journey, read it. If you are a die-hard Thompson fan, and you haven't read this book (although i don't see how that is possible), you must read this. if you hate Nixon and like to see him and everybody associated with him being ridiculed, its all here.
This book is amazing. In places, it is a hard-hitting, play by play outline of what happened in the election and on the campaign, with interviews and relevant articles. In others, it describes how he ruined Ed Muskie's sunshine special campaign, or cursing at Nixon.
It is serious, it is insanely hilarious. It is an example of true hardcore journalism, and at the same time it is a true piece of Gonzo journalism. It is totally schizophrenic. Like A Tale of Two Cities, it seems to be about two things at once, the campaign itself, and the events surrounding it.
Another great thing is the drawings. I don't know of anybody who can forget "Godzilla" by Ralph Steadman or any of his other brilliant drawings.
