| MontereyKid's Full Review: Fender American Deluxe Fat Strat Fmt Electric Guit... |
Ever had one of those mystical experiences when you just walk into a music store not intending to get anything and end up finding your Holy Grail just sitting there with amongst so much rabble? That's what happened to me with a Fender Super Strat! First a little back ground. I have been playing guitar for 23 years. My first Electric guitar was 1963 Fender Stratocaster. It was refinished in antique white all the way up the back of the neck like a Les Paul. Too Bad for the collectors! It played like a dream and sounded even better. It had a feeling like it was made to fit in my hands comfortably. It was very easy to play and made just about anything sound good. Too good to be true? Yes it was. after several years I let it go for next to nothing...$500.
I have spent the better part of 15 years trying to find that guitar or one like it. I have probably tried out 5000 strats in my quest. Then one day I played this super strat on a whim and fell in love.
The Super Strat has a light weight ash body with a maple neck and rosewood fret board. It was painted with a translucent sort of clear or tan color with a tortoise shell pick guard. The first thing I noticed was the feel of the neck. Not too fat, not too skinny, and smooth on the edges, not sharp. The neck radius I'm guessing is about 9" or 10" not too flat and not too curved, just right! Wow this thing just felt great!
But I've had Strats(Squires to Custom Shop vintage Re-issues) that felt great but didn't have the tone I have been looking for since my 63'. So I plugged it into a Marshall MG-15 watt practice amp and dialed in some clean tone and began trying out the different pickup settings. Wow this thing just kept blowing me away! It did the Bluesy Neck pickup thing Great! and the clucking in between positions on the 5 way switch had me thinking Mark Knopfler type riffs! The bridge pickup sounded great too! Sort of Tele-Roy Buchanan type harmonics and sweet tone. Then I noticed the toggle switch between the tone knobs...this thing has Seven pickup configurations! and they all sounded great! Clean and Dirty this guitar just blew me away. When I asked about the price the guy at the counter told me it was on sale for $500.00 I couldn't believe it! It was easily the best strat in the store.
