cheetah1's Full Review: Fender& Frontman& 15r Combo Guitar Amplifier
I have owned my Fender Frontman 15R for 3 years now and have the Chinese model that looks identical to the larger Fender amps. I'm very impressed overall with the quality of the amp.
The amp weighs about 16 pounds and looks to be of a very high quality in construction and detail. It has a closed back design and two small round cutouts in the speaker grille. The only fault I find with the amp is the cheap 8 inch speaker it comes with. That speaker is now in the garbage. I did not think it was even worth reselling on Ebay. I did replace it with a Jensen Mod speaker that ran me about 27 dollars.
Fenders are known for their great clean tone and this amp is no exception. It sounds great just like those old Fender amps on those surf records in the 60's but being solid state it lacks that bell like quality that the old Fender tube amps have.
The reverb tank at the bottom of the amp is large and I am impressed with the quality of reverb the amp offers. Surely the reverb in this unit is better than ones in other amps like the Pathfinder 15R. There is a 3 knob equalizer so you can shape the amps tone to your own tastes and an overdrive button.
The amp has 2 volume knobs on the front panel. One is used when the overdrive button is not pushed, in the amps clean mode. The other volume knob only works when the overdrive button is pushed in.
There are two RCA input jacks on the amp so you can play along with a CD player or whatever.
People complain about the distortion on Fender transistor amps and the distortion on the tube amps sometimes gets negative marks from reviewers as well. With the overdrive switch on I have to back off the gain to get a musical tone, if not the amp sounds a bit harsh. The overdrive switch is good for classic rock tunes but not for heavy metal.
This amp is louder and has more punch than my Fender G-Dec 15 watt modeling amp which has a more processed tone compared to the frontman.
Like most Fender amps this one sounds best with single coil guitars.
The amp has good volume for it's size. You crank the amplifier up and it stays musical with good tone while playing clean at loud volumes.
