| shinysideup's Full Review: Fender Standard Precision Bass 013-6100 |
In 1975, as a 15 year old, I purchased a used Beatles-like bass, hoping to become a musician. That bass had cheap hardware, cheap electronics and sounded like it had a sock tied around the strings. The lack of instrument-quality lead to a poor musical experience, and ultimately, my walking away from the bass for 28 years.
Now, 28 years later, I had the compelling urge to try the bass again, so I set out on the quest to learn more about the brands and models of bass out there. After hours of research and several trips to the guitar store, I decided to buy the Fender Standard Precision Bass - Model 013-6100.
I had the guitar salesman demo several different models and got my heart set on a Deluxe P-Bass Special with the P/J pickup configuration. The jazz pickup sound was neat, but I really liked the sound of the split P bass coil.
Reconsidering the fact that I am a bass rookie (again), I decided that I might not need to purchase a $525.00, ($699.00 MSRP) Deluxe P-Bass Special bass. I knew, however, that I definitely did not want to buy another cheap bass guitar!
For whatever reason, I kept finding myself drawn to the Fenders. Now, although they are less expensive, I didn't even want to consider a Fender Squire bass. I have a Fender Squire Stratocaster 6 string guitar and I don't think the electronics are all that great. My selection was narrowing.
My final selection eventually came down to a choice between the Fender Standard Jazz Bass and the Fender Standard Precision Bass. I preferred the sound of the Standard Precision bass, (more booming and less like a stand-up jazz base), and it was $100.00 less than the jazz bass. So, I purchased the Fender Standard Precision Bass.
Upon getting it home, I plugged it into my 30-year-old 130-watt bass amplifier and gave it run. It sounds simply fantastic! I can't get over how much more of an enjoyable experience it is to play on a quality instrument like this, than it is playing a cheap toy bass; regardless of the price difference!
The sound quality is awesome. Everything, including the hardware, wood and black paint on the body is flawless. It is very comfortable to hold and play, and it just screams out "I am a quality instrument... you made a wise choice"!
Ok, I don't have 20 years worth of bass playing experience upon which I base my opinions, but I know quality when I see it and when I hear it. Having played trumpet in a band or orchestra for 15 years, I also know a bit about sound quality. This Standard Precision Bass has awesome sound quality! When I was tuning, with an electronic tuner, I noticed that I could lightly finger a note and it would just continue to ring for 30 seconds or more, and never waver more than + or - 1% on the electronic tuner.
After purchasing the Fender Standard Precision Bass and spending about six hours playing it the last two days, I am very happy with my purchase decision. It's a great bass guitar. No buyer's remorse here! Thanks Fender!
