I first tried these Fiber One Oats & Chocolate Chewy Bars several months ago and have been buying them on a regular basis ever since. One of the ER docs at the hospital brought some in one evening to share with the nursing staff. Aww, how thoughtful, right? Healthy snacks are often hard to come by, especially at work as there's usually junk food lying around everywhere. Little did we know he was trying to be funny as these nutrition bars gave both him and his wife horrible gas every time they ate them! So I highly suspect he wanted to share the love by getting rid of them :-) Anyway, his little practical joke backfired, at least on me, as I've now found a new and tasty snack that keeps me satisfied longer in between meals. Read on to find out more about a yummy snack that contains 35% of the daily recommended amount of fiber most of us should be eating more of on a regular basis.
~~~The Fiber One Bars~~~
These Fiber One Chewy Bars actually come in several different flavors, but the Oats & Chocolate is the only one I've tried so far. A one serving bar (1.4 ounce)contains 140 calories, 4 grams of fat, 29 grams of carbohydrates, grams of protein, and a whopping 9 grams of fiber. Of course there are other bars out there containing more protein and less fat & carbs, but I doubt you'll find one that has that much fiber in one serving! It looks much like a typical granola bar with oats and chocolate chips scattered throughout. There's also a drizzle of chocolate that zig-zags across the top of the bar. It's soft, chewy, and easy to bite into, which is a plus for me as I've discovered many former favorite foods I can't eat while I'm still wearing my adult braces. The bar is a decent size as an in between meal snack (approximately 4 inches long), but I doubt the 140 calories would be enough if used as a meal replacement even with all that extra fiber that's added. So if you love chocolate and want to sneak a bit more fiber into your diet, then definitely give one of these Fiber One Oats & Chocolate Chewy Bars a try.
~~~Price & Availability~~~
These Fiber One Oats & Chocolate Chewy Bars can be purchased in boxes of 5, 10, 20, and even 30 individually wrapped bars. So far I've only seen the smaller boxes of 5 and 10 in local grocery stores, but amazon.com has the 20 count box for $10.99. That's a great deal, considering the 5 count boxes sell for around $3 each. I did recently purchase a 10 count box for a little over $5, but it was on sale. So definitely shop around and buy in bulk if you enjoy the taste as much as I do. Other flavors include the Oats & Peanut Butter as well as the Granola Bar Oats & Caramel just to name a couple. There are also breakfast cereals sold in the Fiber One line as well but I only have experience with these bars so far. My only concern with ordering these Fiber One Oats & Chocolate Chewy Bars online during the current summer months is them very possibly arriving all melted and gooey, but check out the good deal they have at amazon.com here:
If you are like the majority of Americans, you probably aren't getting enough fiber from the foods you eat on a daily basis. The RDA of fiber is around 25 grams/day, but most of us take in much less than that. So just one of these 140 calorie Fiber One Oats & Chocolate Fiber Bars gets you well over 1/3 of the way to that requirement right there! Too easy and yummy tasting at the same time! We can, in part, blame our fiber poor diets on easy access to cheap fast food since healthier foods like fresh fruits and veggies are usually the more expensive ones. Not only does fiber help keep you feeling fuller longer, but it also helps to keep your bathroom visits more regular as well. So there's certainly more than one benefit to consciously adding more fiber to your diet. Just be careful though as we are told to gradually increase fiber over time to help minimize potential gastrointestinal discomfort. I suppose this is why that certain ER doctor thought it would be funny to get the nurses all gassed up! LOL Lucky for me, I've already discovered long ago that both protein and fiber are my friends for both weight and appetite control, so I noticed no bloating or any other bowel related changes. Instead, I was introduced to a great tasting snack that I've continued to purchase regularly ever since. So what was intended as a joke has now become a great tasting snack choice for me, so I suppose I ended up with the last laugh in the end (no pun intended)! For not only does eating one of these satisfy any chocolate cravings I might have between meals without adding in tons of fat and calories, but I actually feel fuller longer after eating one of these Fiber One Oats & Chocolate Chewy Bars. With a bit more protein added and some of the sugar removed, it would be a more nutritionally sound snack. But for now, it still beats alot of other similar tasting bars I've tried in the past. And they truly do not "gas me up" in the least.
~~~Overall Recommendation~~~
As an occasional snack between meals, these Fiber One Oats & Chocolate Chewy Bars not only taste great but they also give your body that extra dose of fiber it needs as a small step in the right direction for overall good health. Of course if you have a sensitive stomach and/or aren't used to eating much fiber on a regular basis, go easy at first and allow your body to get used to this dietary change. I find that snack and/or candy bars containing mostly sugar last no time at all and then leave me feeling sluggish and starved soon after I eat them. Add in some protein and fiber, however, and it takes much longer to start feeling hungry again. As a snack or even as a light lunch sometimes, I'll now often eat a cup of low fat yogurt containing protein and only 80 calories as well as one of these Fiber One Oats & Chocolate Chewy Bars and I'll stay full for hours. So not only am I satisfying my almost daily chocolate craving without bingeing on a ton of fat and calories, but I'm also doing something just a little bit healthier for my body's digestive system with the extra fiber. It's a no-brainer win-win situation all around for me. And best of all, the price averages out to a bit more than and affordable 50 cents for each chewy, chocolate treat when purchasing the larger sized boxes. Highly recommended with five stars! Good luck and happy snacking :-)
