tprules14's Full Review: Frequency for PlayStation 2
Recently, music games such as Dance Dance Revolution, where you interact with the game and music as it is played, have become extremely popular. However, some people aren't exactly thrilled about these music games because they don't actually get to create music. Well, if you're remotely interested in music, video games, and having fun, you will love Frequency, a game where not only do you play with music, but you can even create your own songs and play along with them.
The gameplay introduced in Frequency is very innovative and exciting, although a little difficult to explain at first. Upon first playing the game, it seems like a warped version of Tempest, a classic arcade hit, but it is actually very different. The playing field is a long octagonal tunnel, and the eight sides to the tunnel each hold a unique instrument. For example, one side is bass, one side is drums, etc. You go down the tunnel on one of the eight sides, but you can switch to the other sides quickly and easily. Anyway, soon you will see markings on your side of the tunnel...little markings on the left, middle, and right of your side. Right when your cursor (you as you are moving down the tunnel) reaches one of these markings, you have to press a button (three buttons (L1, R1, and R2) are assigned to the three types of markings: left, middle, and right, respectively). If you time it correctly, then you hear a sound and the marking lights up. Basically, you continue down the tunnel, timing your buttons to the markings. It sounds a little boring and repetitive, but it starts to get really fast, difficult, and extremely addictive (Oh, and if this seems confusing, there is a tutorial in the game to help you figure it out).
If you're wondering about the markings, they align with excellent music that is playing in the background (so the game plays along with the music). Anyway, this premise is exciting, but it isn't the most exciting part of the game. The really cool feature of the game is that you can take the songs originally included in the game (which are great, by the way) and remix them. In other words, as you are going down the tunnel and playing the game, by pressing buttons you can add beats to the song, or you can even scratch through the song like a DJ! That's not all, though. There is also a really fun mode included in the game where you can start with an empty playing field, and by pressing buttons you create your own song, completely unique to you. For example, you press buttons (left, middle, and right mark buttons) and create beats on your side of the tunnel. When you're done creating a drum beat, for example, you can move on to another side of the eight-sided tunnel and create synth beats, or you can even scratch through your own created songs.
The gameplay doesn't stop there, though. There is also an entirely different an exciting feature in the game that will be sure to keep you and your friends interested: multiplayer. You can play the game against up to three other players, trying to see who can score the highest. Also, supposedly, gamers will soon be able to play a version of Frequency online against gamers across the country or more.
The idea that you can create your own songs is simply amazing, but don't feel like you HAVE to - the songs already included in the game are amazing - with artists like Paul Oakenfold, Orbital, and No Doubt, your ears will certainly be pleased. In fact, all the tunes are very exciting and extremely catchy.
The graphics work extremely well with the game. You won't see innovative, visually stunning graphics, but you will see bright, clean, and clear graphics that will be sure to keep you interested. While playing through the game, the moving graphics are very quick and smooth, and you won't see many glitches or graphical errors at all (Not that you will be paying attention because you will probably be too busy enjoying the game to care).
The menus are very easy to navigate through, and the controls are very simple to master (and if you don't agree, you can configure the controls to your liking).
Basically, Frequency is an amazing and innovative game. I haven't really seen any game like it; it's fast-paced, exciting, addictive, and it has an intense lasting appeal; you simply won't want to stop playing.
