| clees's Full Review: FUJIFILM FinePix F601 Zoom Digital Camera |
I bought the Fuji F601 after my first Fuji died. I've had the camera for about a year and a half now and I don't regret my purchase at all.
The F601's biggest advantage are the manual controls. Most point and shoot cameras offer manual "features", that are really just film speed adjustment and white balance, or "aperture priority", but not giving you the complete control you would expect in a fully manual camera. The F601 gives you the ability to control aperture, shutter speed, and film speed all at once.
The full manual functions may seem strange in a point and shoot digital camera, but the versatility is what makes the F601 so great. As a film production student, I prefer to use manual functions when I can. However, when I'm out with my friends or travelling, I don't always have time to meter the light or play around with the controls, in which case, I want to use the auto function.
The two screens on the F601 (one to set controls, the other as the viewfinder) does take SOME getting used to, but is definitely a feature I'd be sorry to lose on my next camera.
The resolution in this camera is fairly good, and I've been quite happy with how my pictures turn out (although there does seem to be strong Green-Red elements when pictures are actually printed at a lab, although this is easily corrected in photoshop prior to printing).
The biggest drawback is actually the battery life of about 100-150 photos. When I'm setting up lighting for a scene, I like to "test" the set up with my F601 to see how harsh the shadows/light will appear on film - sometimes it can run out of juice a little fast, although a replacement battery only costs 60$ to have handy in this case.
