| dkozin's Full Review: Fuji Superia Reala 100 135-24, 100 ASA (CS13524) |
On my recent trip to Portland and Astoria, Oregon, I decided to use Fuji Superia Reala film that I have purchased a couple months ago and stored in my freezer hoping for a good opportunity to use it.
I have heard that Reala has amazing colors and sharpness and now that I am holding the pictures from my trip (made with Nikon N55 camera and Nikon Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6 G lens) I can see that the claims were true.
The Fuji Superia Reala (a.k.a. Fujicolor Reala and other combinations of Fuji, Fujicolor, Superia Reala or simply Reala) is only available in ISO 100 and, according to Fuji, is sharp and produces true-to-life colors.
Performance
I found that the film is indeed sharp without being too contrasty, has very fine grain, has excellent colors, which are vivid yet true-to-life. The skin tones look amazing as do greens and blues. I have used a polarizing filter with some of my shots and they came out amazingly well with deep blue sky and water, lush green foliage, perfect skin tones.
I found that slightly overexposing this film gives good results. Try +0.3 EV, +0.5 EV or even +0.8 EV to see what works best for you. Unfortunately, this film is only available in ISO 100, which makes for long exposures in low light or when using polarizing filters. As such, some shots require a tripod and remote release or timer.
For portraits, even in the low light conditions with no flash, you can (and should) use larger apertures (I used f/5.6-f/8, but f/3.3 would also work well).
If you shoot in bright light or use a flash with a subject that is close to the camera, you can use this film even with a point-and-shoot camera. If your camera has a fast lens (large maximum aperture, e.g. f/1.7, f/1.9 or even f/3.3-5.6), you can use this film even in low light.
This film has better and more life-like colors than Fuji Super HQ or Fuji Superia and has less contrast. Some pictures made with Reala looked like postcards.
Packaging and Pricing
Unfortunately, you cannot buy this film in Target, Wal-Mart or other non-photo store. I bought ten 36-exposure rolls online for $31 shipped. The film is available in 24 and 36-exposure rolls.
Bottom Line
If ISO 100 suits you, I highly recommend Fuji Superia Reala.- it features beautiful colors, excellent sharpness and perfect skin tones.
