| late_mom's Full Review: Fuzzi Bunz Diapers |
After 6 weeks of using Fuzzi Bunz with our newborn, we are delighted! We put our baby girl into new Fuzzi Bunz at one week, when the free disposable samples from the hospital ran out and we were less concerned about her umbilical stump catching on the fleece.
Our setup: Fuzzi Bunz cover stuffed with 1 Joey Bunz Hemparoo and either one small 3 or 4 layer flannel insert (diaper doubler type, purchased from WAHM sources) in the daytime, or with one 3-layer hourglass shaped terry doubler (also made by hand -- wish I could find a few more of these, I only have four) at night. For convenience, we are also using disposable paper liners on top.
Our pail system is a bit complicated, but it is so by choice -- we could probably put everything into a dry pail but we put the "innards" into a wet pail (water and a little Tide detergent) and the covers into a Diaper Champ, which uses regular kitchen trash bags -- I haven't had to replace the bag yet. The paper liners do not make it through our old plumbing so they go out in the trash (I don't like the idea of trying to reuse them). Everything from both pails goes into the washing machine for a spin (after the wet pail is drained into the toilet) and cold rinse, then a full wash on hot with 1/2 the suggested amount of Tide Free, then an extra cold rinse. The covers get air-dried and everything else gets dried in the machine. The Hemparoos take a long cycle to dry completely; I've started hanging them up when they are almost completely dry to save about 20 minutes additional drying time. Any staining on the white doublers gets treated with Bac-Out (great stuff) and sunshine; no staining on the Hemparoos or the covers so far.
Our breastfed girl seems really comfortable now at 7 weeks and never complains that her diaper is wet/messy (maybe that comes later)? Leaks have been very few -- the trick to avoiding them, besides making sure that the snaps are set to keep the diaper good and snug, seems to be arranging the gathers around the leg openings to keep them relatively taut, especially in back. It is indeed true that this is a fantastic nighttime diaper system; we can put her in our nighttime setup around 11:30 PM and she is fine and leak-free without a change until morning.
Though they are fantastic, I haven't been using multiple Hemparoos because the cost is a bit prohibitive. I plan to try upping the number of flannel doublers if one Hemparoo starts to be inadequate. I got great new 4-layer doublers on ebay for under $1.00 apiece. The Hemparoos do indeed seem to get thirstier with time; both they and the doublers tend to come out soaked but never dripping.
As far was wear goes, I do notice that the fleece on the Fuzzi Bunz has worn a bit thin rather quickly -- some users have complained that the fleece on newer ones is not as good quality as it was previously. It could also be the Tide, which is pretty harsh. I don't think this makes too much difference, though.
Always happy to promote a great product. Gotta run, girlie wants some love (and a change)...
