| bikruca's Full Review: Fuzzi Bunz Diapers |
Cloth diapers are something I use a lot of. Every day we change diaper after diaper so I get lots of time to access the performance. Because I have the best fiancé in the world, he embraces the cloth diapering along with me. We have different preferences, and do things slightly differently but there is one thing we agree on, we love fuzzibunz.
In fact, my fiancé tells everyone who will listen to him how much he likes them. He even has a song he sings when changing a fuzzibunz, I am even tired of hearing about it!
How I discovered FUZZIBUNZ
At first with my baby I used mostly cotton fitted diapers and covers, which was fine for when he was a newborn as he didnt really care that he felt wet, was peeing and pooping CONSTANTLY and we went through about a million diapers a day (well, more like a dozen or so). Newborn sized cheaper flitted diapers did the trick, and we were able to use covers more than once. Then I got a package of used diapers free for shipping, so these diapers were well used. Included in these diapers was a white fuzzibunz. I have bought all of my fuzzibunz used so please keep in mind if you buy them new they may perform differently. I also have some older style fuzzibunz so they have different snap settings.
Background
Fuzzibunz were created by a WAHM (work at home mom), namely Tereson of Mother of Eden (you guessed it, she has a daughter named Eden for whom these were invented). She created these diapers out of a need for a modern easy to use, cloth diaper. She created something so unique it even has its own US patent. They are now a huge name in cloth diapering and sold by many cloth diaper retailers.
The picture provided by epinions is an old style fuzzibunz. The outer is no longer made of fleece it is now made of Poly-Urithane Laminate (PUL) and the tabs are pointy, not round, and they have a tag on the right tab. Here is a picture of the new style- http://www.jacquisnappies.co.uk/bluefb.jpg
What is a Fuzzibunz?
Fuzzibunz are a pocket diaper that comes in various sizes. They also have many colours and some prints with more coming out constantly. They have hidden elastic at the legs and the back. They have a waterproof outer layer and a fleece inner layer.
These diapers come empty, there is no absorbency at all included (depending on where you buy them they may include inserts). This is because they are a pocket style diaper. They have elastic on the waterproof outer layer and it is not sewn to the inner fleece layer at the pack, forming a pocket. You can stuff many different things in there. For a really trim fitting diaper you can use the custom made super absorbent inserts many diaper stores make (ranging from 4 10 dollars US). For a more economical choice you can use a prefolded diaper (ranging from 1-3 dollars US). I mostly use prefolds and they are still pretty trim fitting and very absorbent.
The sizing ranges from extra small to toddler sizes, and each size has several snaps to adjust the fit at the legs and the waist. Six Snaps at the waist and three at each leg. The newer ones come with an extra snap on one of the tabs so you can get an even smaller fit for smaller babies. My first minor concern is that I have found that with the different diapers I have to use a different snap setting for almost every single one. I think that some were cut differently. I bought all of mine used, so they were made at different times and I have heard that they have recently resolved some of the quality control issues.
Care for your Fuzzibunz
Fuzzibunz can be thrown in the wash with your other diapers, and use regular detergent. You cant use bleach of fabric softener (same with other cloth diapers). Bleach breaks down the fibers causing them to wear out faster, and fabric softener coats the fibres causing them to loose absorbency. Not to mention these diapers dont stain and always stay soft so there is really no need!
You can hang them to dry (which will make them last longer) or put them in the dryer (at low heat). Either way they dry quickly.
What makes them so good?
Well these diapers are lined with polyester fleece which keeps baby dry because fleece does not absorb fluid, instead it passes the water through to the absorbent innards. This means baby stays happy and dry longer, which is great when they start sleeping through part of the night! I have noticed that when I have my baby in these he stays asleep longer, and when he wakes up he is not crying, he is just rooting (hungry!).
This also helps prevent diaper rash as the skin stays drier.
Because the absorbent layers can be taken out; these diapers dry in a snap (nice for us moms who arent as diligent at doing laundry as we should be!) And are more hygienic than diapers where all the layers are sewn together (these can grow mold and not release all bacteria).
I can stuff these diapers with whatever I have handy.
They are super easy to use, all of babys grandparents can use them (except my dad but he has never tried).
They are cute, yet simple.
They are easy to find used and maintain their quality when you buy them used (usually).
I havent had many problems with leaking at all.
The fleece shouldnt stain (polyester cant really stain that easily).
The elastic at the legs and back keep the poop where it belongs.
The colours dont fade.
What are some of the problems these diapers have?
As I mentioned before, I have some concerns with the consistency of their sizing.
If you let whatever you are stuffing it with stick out the back, their clothes will get soaked, and with a small diaper if you are using a prefold you have to fold it down to ensure this doesnt happen (trust me!).
They are pretty expensive (regular retail is 14.95/ each) especially considering that you still have to buy something to put into them for them to work.
They might not fit all babies (no diaper will) so try one or two before you buy a bunch.
If you do the leg snaps up too tight your baby will get red marks on their legs, and if you do them up too loose they will leak, so there is a bit of trial and error involved.
As you can see I have a lot to say about what now makes up most of my diapering system. If you want more information, visit the fuzzibunz website at www.fuzzibunz.com
