| pdxmama's Full Review: Fuzzi Bunz Diapers |
I started using these diapers on my daughter about 4 months ago. I wished that I'd taken the plunge earlier! She was starting potty training and the thought of never buying another diaper (after setting up an initial stash) was very appealing after 2+ years of trips to Costco every month or so. I'd also heard the rumor that cloth helps kids potty train quicker. After 2 months (including a 2-week long road trip) my dd now wears these for naps and night-time and longer car rides - otherwise, she's in undies!
Fuzzy Bunz are pocket style cloth diapers. They are made of a PUL (polyurethane laminate)outer and a microfleece inner. The PUL is available in many bright and pastel colors, as well as white. The PUL is soft, very thin, and waterproof. The microfleece inner acts as a stay dry liner and wicks the wetness through to the insert. The microfleece is breathable and very soft - hence, "Fuzzy Bunz". Between the PUL and microfleece is a pocket which you add inserts (AKA "stuffers" or "soakers") for absorbency - a prefold diaper, microfiber inserts and towels, and hemp inserts are popular. In a pinch I've used just regular towels! The method of closure for Fuzzy Bunz is snaps. There are 6 waist snaps and 8 thigh snaps - the snaps are approx 3/4" apart. I've found them to be good spacing to get a snug fit (not too far apart).
I've found the sizing to be generous. Fuzzy Bunz come in Preemie/XS, Small, Medium, Petite Toddler, Large, and Extra Large. I've never diapered a newborn in Fuzzy Bunz, so I can only speak for my toddler. She currently wears Mediums or Petite Toddler sizes. According to the sizing charts, she would have started wearing the Mediums around 4-6 months or 12-15 lbs. Top range for mediums is 30-35 lbs, and we have lots of room left in these at 27 lbs. The Petite Toddler size also has lots of room left, the weight range is 18-35+lbs. Petite toddler size has a longer rise and wider crotch area than the mediums, but the thigh is an inch smaller. They are made for skinny or petite children.
One other helpful thing with the sizing of Fuzzy Bunz is the child's thigh measurement. Small thigh measurements are 5-10". Medium thigh measurements are 10-13". Petite Toddler measurements are 9-12". Large thigh measurements are 11-14". X-Large thigh measurements are 14-16". I recommend only purchasing one diaper to ensure that you can get a good fit before stocking up.
I used the following sizing charts:

I purchased my diapers from www.nickisdiapers.com for $14.95 each (including inserts) - the price has since gone up to $17.95. Fuzzy Bunz now includes a Mother of Eden microterry insert with the diaper - previously they were purchased separately (some companies offered complimentary inserts). Most online retailers offer a discount when quantities of 3 or more are purchased.
I love that I can customize absorbency for day versus night. I got microfiber inserts when I purchased the diapers (they now come standard). But for added absorbency I can use something as simple as a wash cloth, a microfiber towel, a burp rag, any absorbent material really (hemp is the most absorbent).
I love that my daughter loves these diapers - the first time I put it on her, she giggled. She now balks at paper diapers and thinking about it, I don't blame her because these are so soft with the microfleece inner.
I also love that I feel good about making a smaller impact upon the environment. I'm putting solid waste where it belongs, in the sewer and not in the dump. I wont need to buy any more disposables. I can use these for my next child and probably still sell them 2nd hand and recover a good percentage of my set-up costs!
My DH has no problem using these diapers. I showed him how they worked - very simple and straighforward. My MIL used these diapers with no problem at all - I just showed her which snaps were dds. Great for people new to cloth. I loaned one out to a friend and she also found it easy to use and her ds liked the fleece too!
The only downside was (and is now over)... It took me a while to refine my washing routine - but that had more to do with my HE washer not rinsing well, than the diapers. I discovered that none of my clothes were really getting fully rinsed but that's another review... Once I got my routine, I found that I use very little detergent and their costs are very minimal.
I listed initial cost as a Con. I would like to note that I think over the child's diapering Fuzzy Bunz initial cost would still be less than disposables total cost and much less than disposables if you factor in their resale value.
