| throwbackmama's Full Review: Fuzzi Bunz Diapers |
As I detailed in an earlier review I have been cloth diapering my children the better part of six years now.
The toughest part of cloth diapering thus far has been the dreaded *night diapering dilemma*. In order to get the absorbency needed to keep baby (and jammies, and crib sheets) dry all night and into the morning, a mama needs to layer so many layers of cotton over her baby's bum that baby cannot lay comfortably on his back--as recommended by health professionals!
Well, thanks to the Fuzzi Bunz diaper system, my four month old baby sleeps all night in dry pajamas and sheets!
The Fuzzi Bunz diaper is what is known in cloth diapering circles as a pocket diaper. The outer cover and an inner liner are attached, leaving a pocket for an absorbent core to be customized by the user.
The outer layer of this diaper is made up of PUL, a polyester material that is waterproof on one side. It is lightweight, soft and stretchy. The inner of the pocket is made up of a buttery soft fleece--which wicks moisture towards the lining of the diaper--and keeps baby's bum dry--as fleece is a nonabsorbent material. The diaper is attached with two rows of nylon snaps, which allows for a wide range of waist and thigh sizes. There is soft enclosed elastic at the waist and thighs, and the elastic does not leave red marks on my son's thighs.
It is up to you to add an inner absorbent core to this diaper. Many use a cotton pre fold diaper folded into thirds, and though this is an effective filling--it is not the trimmest option. Better options are the micro fiber liners made by the same manufacturer of the Fuzzi Buns, or various trim and absorbent hemp/cotton liners designed specifically for this diaper. The beauty of the system is that you can customize the absorbency of this diaper.
I think that by using a hemp absorbent liner inside of this diaper I get a very trim and absorbent fit. These diapers are only very slightly more bulky than a disposable diaper. In my opinion they are much more absorbent than a disposable diaper at night, and a nice benefit is that you do not end up with all of those little gel balls that you find after a disposable diaper is left on for too long.
My son wears this diaper from 7 PM to 7 AM every day and over the course of a week we might have the slightest amount of leaking once a week or so.
I also use this diaper when we are on outings, or when i know we will not have a chance to change diapers as often as I would at home.
You can find more information on this diaper by reading on the designers web site at http://motherofeden.com/ .
An important note is that over the course of the past year or so, this diaper has gone through several changes. It no longer looks like the diaper in the photo here at epinions, and since the modifications that have been made in the design, many of the older reviews for this diaper are valid only for those particular models.
From what I have read and heard first hand, this diaper has improved greatly since its inception.
The main downside of this diaper is it's cost. It runs around $14 each if purchased new. Though it does not require a separate cove, the absorbent layer is not sold with the diaper, so that is an additional expense. They wash up easily though and hold up well. If you only plan on using these at night, two Fuzzi Buns would be sufficient if you washed every two days. They dry quickly as well.
Bottom line, this is a great diaper. I have not even bothered to experiment with other night time diapering systems as this works so well. I wish this diaper was around six years ago!
