I have absolutely got to be one of the biggest cooking fanatics around. I love to cook and it shows. My wife and I always have a meal, rather than just making something really quick. We always plan our day around whatever dinner we plan on creating for that night. It is definitely a time that we look forward to every day and gives us a great opportunity to sit down together and talk about the day's events. Not to mention, it's a great chance for us to nurture our bodies, an experiment a little bit with food.
One great recipe book that I found recently is George Stella's Livin' Low Carb.
About the Author
George Stella is actually the host of a television show on the Food Network which is about the low carb lifestyle. In fact many of the recipes within the book are featured on the show.
Concept
The book focuses around foods that are part of a low carbohydrate diet, that was made popular by Atkins. All of the recipes within the book really focus on trying to ensure that you can easily maintain the diet and get proper nutrition at the same time.
The idea is that you shouldn't have to be limited by eating only bland foods when you are on a diet. George Stella really dives into making dieting that much more pleasurable and easy to stick with with great recipes. It is assumed that if you are happy with your diet and the food that you won't care about what you are missing out on. That is the basic concept of the book.
Inside the book
The book has quite a few different recipes throughout it, all of which focus on a great low carbohydrate diet. The book is easily organized by what type of meal it is, making it quite easy to find something for any time of the day. There are different categories, for morning starts, appetizers, dinners, etc. So, it's extremely easy to find any recipe that will fit whatever you are looking to make it for.
One of my favorite items in the book is a recipe for spiced muffins, with a cream cheese frosting. I took this recipe a step further and rather than just using the cream cheese as a frosting, I took it while the muffin was still hot or warm rather, and stuff it into the middle of the muffin. I found that this makes it like a twinkie, and has pretty much eliminated my desire to eat twinkies.
One of the best recipes, that I have ever had for an appetizer are the crab stuffed mushrooms. I have since modified the recipe somewhat for taste, but the recipe pretty much requires using crab, and stuffing it inside of a large mushroom and cooking it. It is so amazingly good! I take the mushrooms now and deep fry them after breading them a little bit. I find this really brings out the flavor. Of course, that isn't very low carb, but it's wonderful.
And can't forget a main course. I am a huge fan of stuffed peppers, but I can never find a good recipe. This is an excellent recipe, that I didn't have to modify or anything. The best part about it, it's part of a healthy dieting plan. But I really wasn't worried about the diet plan when I bought the book, I just like healthy recipes.
There are all sorts of other recipes throughout the book as well, including seafood, fish, salads, chicken, beef, pretty much something for every type of taste. There's a wide range of flavors as well, not just one style of cuisine like many books. I thought it was a great mix, because I could use the book day after day without getting sick of the food. Definitely a lot of variety within the pages of the book.
Final Thoughts
This is one of the better books out on the market as far as healthy or low carb dieting recipe books are concerned. I found that the pages were filled with recipes that are absolutely wonderful and so far I've tried a good chunk of them, and none of them had been bad at all. In fact, most of them are now recipes that I plan on using on a regular basis.
The variety includeded within the book is so great that there's no way you'll miss any of the fatty foods that dieting is supposed to avoid.
