| fresca's Full Review: Gerber Graduates Fruit & Cereal Bars |
I enjoy feeding my grand daughter. But now that shes getting older shed rather feed herself. If I hold a banana shell bit from it. If I peel an apple shell make short work of it. I want her to try new foods, tastes, and experiences.
It takes some pre-planning and thought to find baby friendly foods to add to my grocery list especially since I only have her a few days a week.
I bought some Strawberry Banana Graduate Cereal Bars for days when things get hectic and I dont have time to fix her a breakfast. They come prepackaged 8 foil wrapped bars to a box. Each bar is about 3 x 1 which make them a good size for small hands to hold. They are available in 3 flavors: Blackberry, Strawberry Banana, and Apple Cinnamon.
Ingredients:
The crust is made with Enriched Bleached Flour (Wheat Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Oatmeal (Rolled Oats, Oat Flour), Sugar, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Tricalcium Phosphate, Corn Syrup, Dextrose, Nonfat Dry Milk, Whole Wheat Flour, Soy Lecithin, Salt, Leavening (Potassium Bicarbonate), Vanilla, Zinc Sulfate, Niacinamide, Electrolytic Iron, Thiamin Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), and Riboflavin (Vitamin B2).
The filling inside the Strawberry Banana cereal bar is made with High Fructose Corn Syrup, Sugar, Water, Dextrose, Apple pieces, Apple Powder, Banana flakes, Glycerin, Modified Cornstarch, Strawberry Powder, Citric Acid, Salt Cellulose Gel, Cellulose Gum, Natural flavor, Elderberry Extract, Concentrate Color, Xanthan Gum, and Natural Flavors, Soy, Lecthin, Strawberry Juice Concentrate. Yum - Not
Each individual bar contains the following:
Calories 70
Calories from fat 15
Total fat 1.5 grams
Cholesterol 0 mg
Sodium 50 mg
Potassium 30 mg
Total Carbs 13 grams
Dietary Fiber 0 grams
Protein Less than one gram
Percent of daily vitamin/mineral value:
Vitamin A 0%
Calcium 10%
Thiamin 10%
Niacin 10%
Protein 0%
Vitamin C 0%
Iron 10%
Riboflavin 10%
Vitamin B6 10%
Zinc 10%
These are about half the size, caloric intake and nutritional value of the adult size breakfast bars without being half the cost. "Food" for thought.
My grand daughter eats them without any problems although I doubt that Ill buy any more. She enjoys most fruits and breads so Ill save this box for an emergency. Id rather give her a piece of fruit and a slice of bread in my mind shed be eating real food
As a comparison 1 Banana Contains:
Calcium 1%
Thiamin 2%
Niacin 4%
Protein 0%
Vitamin C 15%
Iron 2%
Riboflavin 5%
Vitamin B6 28%
Zinc 2%
Plus the Banana has a few vitamins the bar does not and the bread will add more vitamins and minerals.
In conclusion
For me, I have the time to shop and cook for my grand daughter so why should I buy convenience foods? Shell get enough of them at home. As for me and my house well have fruit, French toast, pancakes, muffins, eggs, juice, or cheese. Breakfast is usually at 8 - I'll keep the a place set for you.
