| rgt50848's Full Review: Goodyear Assurance TripleTred Tire |
I drive a 2003 Chevrolet Impala LS that has the 200 HP 3.8L V6 and ABS. The car has about 69,000 miles on it so far.
The Chevy came equipped with a set of Goodyear Eagle GA Tires from the Dealer. I ran them to about 60,000 miles, did a little research and replaced them with a new set of Goodyear Assurance TripleTred Tires. I shopped around my area (Queens, NY) and got quotes ranging from about $650 (Sears) to $542 (Mavis Discount Tire.) I managed to get a price of $530 for the whole set, balanced and installed, from a local Brooklyn, NY Tire Shop (Whitey's,) then made my purchase.
After about 9,000 miles of driving (5 months in my case) the tires have been driven through the past Fall and Winter Seasons. We have had a lot of rain and some snow, including the largest Blizzard NYC has ever seen (26.9 inches in Central Park,) so I've got a good idea of what the tires can do in different types of weather.
On dry pavement the traction and handling are terrific. With these Goodyears, my Impala rides solid, even under acceleration in corners, with no squeal or other dramatics. Hard standing starts give you nice acceleration without chirping or wheel spin.
The handling of my Impala in snow and ice conditions, with the Goodyear TripleTreds (especially with a fairly heavy, front-wheel-drive car) is very predictable, providing you know how to drive when the roads are this way. I even took my car out the day after the Blizzard, prior to salting of the roads by NYC Sanitation. By use of the gears, prior experience and with a little common sense, I was still getting around when people with SUV's and 4-Wheel-Drive were getting stuck all over the area. A lot of this has to do with the car but the Goodyears certainly handled their role well.
Driving in the rain at highway speeds is when these TripleTreds really shine. I have never felt the car wandering or aquaplaning at highway speeds over 60 - 65 mph, even in heavy downpours. They really make me feel that my Family and I are safe in the car - no matter what is going on outside. The Assurance TripleTreds are far superior to my old Eagle GA's in this respect.
The only downside I have seen so far is that the tires are a little noisy. This is a small price to pay for the traction and handling you get with the Goodyear Assurance TripleTreds. Also, I have not yet seen any discernible wear on the edges or tread, after 9,000 miles of use.
These are great tires for any family who wants to feel safe on the road, in all types of outside weather conditions.
THIS PARAGRAPH IS AN UPDATE THAT I ENTERED ON 11/8/06. By now I've put over 26,000 miles on the TripleTreds and there is very little evidence of wear. I will be trading the Impala in about 14 more months - at which point these tires will have about 50,000 miles (the car will have about 110,000 miles at that point) - and I am confident that there will still be plenty of tread left. I'm grateful that I won't have to eat the expense of putting a new set of tires on the car before the trade-in. I am still extremely happy with the purchase I made and with the performance of these tires. Who says America can't make a good product anymore?
FINAL UPDATE ENTERED 10/25/07. In mid-July, 2007 I started to notice a slight "bump" during 1st-to-2nd gear upshifts in my car's transmission. So, at the end of July I traded the 2003 (with 106K miles and my TripleTreds on it) for a 2008 Impala LS with my local dealer, Meyer Chevrolet. That, however, will be the basis of a future, separate review. About the Goodyears? With 46,000 miles of (hard) usage there was some discernible edge wear but practically no wear on the tread faces themselves. These tires are advertised to be capable of 80,000 miles and I believe it. They were wearing like iron. I did notice however that they did become a little noisier over time. If you are a quiet freak the Goodyear TripleTreds may not be the best choice for you. If it is more important to you that you have tires that hold the road in heavy rain at 60 mph or better - than you're going to be impressed by the TripleTreds. I have never felt safer passing a tractor-trailer in bad weather than with these tires.
