Nobody told me first grade was going to be like this. This mom is still stuck in the Fisher-Price Little People phase. No more chunky people in my son's room. Creatures only kids could love now permeate every spare space of his room. He is actually asking to do extra chores to get spending money to increase his Star Wars collection. A few weeks ago he added a vehicle to his collection.
Doesn't Stack Up
Anakin's Speeder allows my son to use his imagination and also facilitates play. There was no assembly to this toy, so that was a big plus with me. While the speeder looks authentic enough, it doesn't have very many extras. Molded plastic is the basis for this vehicle with some antennas popping up in back and then the front crash part.
The front of the speeder is built for smashing and crashing. When the front crashes, plastic pops off in front of the windshield exposing gray engine parts. A little switch on the back of the speedster rights the speeder again and enables the plastic pieces to be put back in place. These pieces while not tiny are small enough to get lost easily. They fit securely on the speeder and present no problem in replacing, but a distracted child and an aggressive vacuum could result in a missing part or two. The antennas on the back pop in and out of the speeder body so when you crash they are easily replaced if they get caught on something. Even the plastic lenses are sunk to prevent breakage. You don't have to throw the speeder into the wall, but some force needs to be applied to send the speeder into "crash" mode.
Behind the windshield is the cock pit. To the speeders benefit the steering controls and shifter are made with such flexibility that through all the knocking and twisting around they are still in tact. They have been through a rough time though. Only certain Star Wars characters will fit in the speeder and only in a certain way. In fact in preparation for this review my son had to show me how to cross the legs and bend them to obtain a driving position. Yes, I still had to wiggle Anakin into the seat.
And that is all folks. Maybe that is why I have a hard time liking this vehicle; remember the old X-Wing Fighters? Where are all the noises and sounds? What happened to the flashing lights? What happened to opening and closing secret compartments?
For the price, the speeder isn't a bad buy. It goes everywhere his characters go and was a great hit on share day. My son has a great imagination and although the crashing part isn't used much, it transports the Star Wars characters where they need to go. Maybe at his age that is enough.
