| Freak369's Full Review: Her Black Wings [single] - Danzig Movies |
When looking at the discography of Danzig, its not hard to see why the group has maintained a strong fan base over the years. Theyve preserved, for the most part, their key element darkness. Intertwined in the erotic and hypnotic music are little vignettes that tell the tales of fallen maidens, scorned souls and passion that known no boundaries. Ive always had a deep love of the music that Glenn and the boys put out, but it wasnt until a few years ago that I really started to understand the meanings behind the lyrics. Out of the hundred plus songs the band has released, about twenty of them are what I consider exceptional material. Now, I am a die-hard fan but even I have the ability to remain neutral and separate the fluff and filler from the real music.
Taken from their Lucifuge release, Her Black Wings had a lot of strong competition from the other tracks. Devils Plaything, Im The One and Tired of Being Alive may have gotten most of the publicity when this CD hit the streets but in the long run, Her Black Wings was the one that came out on top. Thirteen years later, the music still has a hard edge to it and gives these wanna be rockers a real run for their money. In essence, thats one of the real draws of Danzigs music, you can pick up one of their first releases and listen it to and now feel like you were sucked into some time warp.
Blackest of the black
darker than night
Come to me my bleeding light
When I first heard Her Black Wings I wasnt all that impressed with it. The introduction didnt really suit the song and really put me off from liking it. But, for as much as I hated the beginning, it was the chorus that sucked me in time and time again. Some people say that Glenn has a soulful yet demonic voice, others that hes nothing more than a howler for me it goes beyond that. Its not that hes singing the words or making the lyrics come to life it goes beyond that. Im a firm believer that the entire group puts their blood sweat and tears into their music and its tracks like this that prove it. It takes one hell of a powerful singer to be able to pull off this type of content and Glenn does it in his usual fashion. I could sit here and go on all night about how great a singer he is, his talent and love of all things dark but the bottom line is that you either like the overall Danzig sound or you dont. The vocals on this song, and the entire CD for that matter, are great but if you cant get into it nothing I say will change your viewpoint.
See she comes on the eve of dusk
In another form
With a scent of rain upon her neck
she brings the lust
The song itself is best left up to personal interpretation but if you read between the lines youll get the basics the embodiment of evil cast into human form. Of course it doesnt hurt that she has a killer body, turns men to stone and feeds on their rotting soul [ok, maybe thats a bit much]. This is one of the Danzig tracks that opens up their core lets everyone get a taste of the spotlight. John Christ does some great work with the guitar pieces and Eerie Vons bass is something that really helps to fill out the track and give it some weight. Biscuits ever present beat is only outdone by his background vocals. On that note, what you are hearing in the background is one of the few tracks where all four members of the group break it down vocally. If I had to pick one of the strongest tracks from the groups discography, this would definitely make it to the Top Five the top spot being reserved for Tired of Being Alive [like you needed me to say that].
Alternate Versions
There are several different versions of this single, some are easier to find than others but they are all worth tracking down if you are a fan of the group. The promotional version will set you back about $15.00 but is well worth the price and effort to get your paws on it. If has four songs, all studio versions, pressed on a nice black and white CD. This originally came packaged with some small stickers, a nice sleeve insert and a tinted case. The tracks on the import Her Black Wings, Mother, Twist of Cain and Killer Wolf. The promotional single is essentially the same as the standard release except it comes packaged in the old waste case sleeve those long cardboard containers that were done away with when people complained about the poor trees. The promo single has Her Black Wings and samples from Mother and Twist of Cain all three tracks appearing on both sides. The standard release cassette has Her Black Wings [studio version] on both sides.
The Bottom Line
If you already have the CD from Danzig, theres no real need to try and track this down unless you are a hard-core fan of the group. Some people [myself included] are fool enough to spend money on something as trivial as a special release or reissued CD just to have it in their collection. For me, this was one of the first cassette singles I purchased from Danzig so it has some special meaning for me. If you are going to try and track down any of the non-standard issue versions, please make sure you are getting the real deal and not a burned copy. Its happened to me in the past and it was a real let down to get a copy of the promotional CD with a cheap photocopy of the insert.
As always, thanks for the read!
