rhuston's Full Review: Hoover U5750-900 WindTunnel Bagless Upright Vacuum
Before buying our Hover WindTunnel U5750900 vacuum, we read Epinions.com, Consumer Reports and other various reviews scattered across the Web. In general it seemed to be highly rated and upon getting it we were not disappointed.
Our first pleasant surprise was that the machine was easy to assemble with just a Phillips screwdriver (and a very small amount of common sense). Anyone who actually owns a screwdriver will be able to do it.
Once assembled, we were ready for a test drive…
Our next pleasant surprise was how long the power cord is. The Hoover has at least a 50% longer cord than our last vacuum had. I wouldn’t have thought that such a simple change would make as big an impression on me but it is so nice to not have to unplug and plug in the vacuum as often. Thankfully, since the cord is long, one of the hooks that stores the cord on the vacuum swivels to allow you to remove it quickly without uncoiling it all the way. One slight downside to the cord; it seems to be a bit susceptible to getting chewed up by the vacuum’s roller brush. I’m not certain if this is because the vacuum is very powerful or if the cord insulation is a bit softer than others we have used. In any case, we have a couple of electrical tape patches where we were a bit careless and drove over the cord.
The U5750900 has a manual height adjustment with 5 settings. The lowest does as good a job on hard floors as any upright vacuum I have ever used. It’s not great on hard floors but that isn’t really what an upright vacuum is intended for. On carpet, however, it really shines.
The dirt gets sucked up and literally flies around in the dirt chamber, which is sort of captivating in the beginning. It is truly amazing how much dirt this machine takes out of our carpet. This is both a testimonial to how well the Hoover cleans and how poorly our old Dirt Devil did.
It didn’t take long for us to fill the dirt chamber and need to do our first emptying. A quick flip of the release lever and pull the dirt chamber out. It has a lid, which is easily removed for dumping, to help contain the dirt and debris. The only downside I see to this design is the dirt chamber is quite a bit smaller than a typical upright’s bag. That means you will empty it more often but it will cost less to operate because of having no bag to replace. It’s a trade off. For me, I like the fact that the dirt chamber is see-through so I know when to dump it. I always hated having to open our other vacuums to feel the bag to see if they needed replacing. Besides, it is kind of satisfying to actually see how well it cleans.
All the controls seem to be fairly well placed, where you would expect them to be. Power switch on the front of the handle, handle release on the back left corner (for your toe), height adjustment on the front of the bottom section.
It stores a stretch hose along the right side of its body, which is easy to take out and use, when you want to use tools. As always, it would be nice to have a longer hose but where would they store a longer hose? Nestled next to where the hose is stored are the tube extensions and a crevice tool. All three of those are 16” long for a combined reach of 4 feet. I had never seen a crevice tool that was 16” long and it has been very handy.
The other notable mention for the tools is the powered brush. It is used with the hose and has a roller brush that spins from the air passing through the tool (there is a small turbine fan inside). It has done a pretty good job of cleaning cat hair from our furniture and has been a very welcome addition to our cleaning tools. Periodically, you do have to open it (very easy with two latches) and clean out debris in order to keep it functioning correctly -if- you have any long hair (or thread, etc…) that you are picking up.
The tools store neatly, in the front, under a small cover where the handle meets the body. That cover is on a hinge so it never is separated from the vacuum and snaps nicely closed so it doesn’t flop open by itself.
This is also the first HEPA vacuum that we have owned. It seems to do an excellent job of filtering the air. This is pretty subjective but I can’t ‘see’ any dust coming from the vacuum and my allergies have been better since we bought it. What more can I say?
Other than our carelessness in running over the cord, the only thing we have had to change is the belt. The belt is changed in the typical fashion by removing the base plate of the vacuum and the roller brush (you will need that Philips screwdriver again).
This machine seems to be well thought out and constructed. Overall, we are extremely happy with our purchase and we would buy it again.
